Bud passed away, surrounded by loved ones, at his home late on April 18th.
Bud was born on September 25, 1936 to Evron and Maxine Shuman in Poplar, MT. He was raised in Wolf Point, MT, where he grew up as the son of the sheriff of Roosevelt County. From high school he enrolled in the Navy, where he played football for the Navy unit and fought in the Korean War. From there, he continued his education at Western Montana College in Dillon MT. There Bud became a four year starter and Hall of Fame football player, which earned him an invite to try out for the Chicago Bears under legendary coach George Halas.
Bud’s true passions in life were family, friends, and football (in no particular order)! When it came to family, Bud was a true hero in the sense of living life to the fullest. There was no shortage of impact felt in the day-to-day shenanigans in the Shuman household. Whether it be from tormenting his children for a day of education, or letting the family bird loose on his wife. Brotherly love requires many talents. According to Edna, the eldest sister, Bud was marvelous in this field. Upon orders from mom (Maxine), Bud reluctantly took the girls to the movies. Where he proceeded to make them walk and sit in the front row. “Mom, he needs a spanking” Edna would suggest.
“I loved him” says JoAnn. “I remember having a deal with him in college, he would get me a date if I did his homework” jokes JoAnn. “Needless to say, the homework was for nothing, I meet the love of my life on Christmas break, away from college”.
The youngest sister Margaret speaks of Bud’s loving side with tears of joy. Margaret’s daughter Margo, who was born with a disability, was something everyone was unsure about. With a fear of difference, Margo confronted Lloyd with a gentle tap on his knee, and it was game over. “He has never put her down since”, recalls Margaret. Kaden, Bud’s first born grandson, was lucky enough to spend time with his papa before he had his stroke. Bud and Kaden would venture off at 9:00 in the morning only to return with a fresh haircut, a container of Pringles, and a Gatorade.
Bud was and will always be a huge supporter of the local football teams. For over 15 years he served as a board member and president of Helena Small Fry Football where he was a major contributor of the mass talent to come out of our Capital City. Boe and Jason, Bud’s two sons, want to remind all the youth football players, that while they are getting all their equipment in those sheds, to remember Bud Shuman, the reason they get to play the great sport of football in the town of Helena.
Bud was a member of many organizations through his years. Shriners and Elks club were just some of the many, but Bud’s favorite was the BS Club.
Bud will forever live on through his sons, Boe (Kami) and Jason (Kris). He is survived by his wife, Judy; and his sisters, Edna (Gene) Songer of Spokane WA, JoAnn (Dick) Miller of Glasgow MT, Margaret (Jim) Thomas of Helena MT, and daughter, Laurie Davis. Bud is also survived by his grandchildren, Kaden,
Carson, Mackenzie, Lantz, and Bearek; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and too many friends to list. He was preceded in death by his father, Evron, his mother, Maxine, and son, Rusty Shuman.
A Memorial Service celebrating Lloyd’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N. Montana Ave. A reception will follow the memorial service at the Fort Harrison Service Club at Fort Harrison. Please visit below to offer a condolence to the family or to share a memory of Bud.

Ed and Gloria Puckett says
The Ed Puckett family spent many fond years as friends with the Bud Shuman family in Wolf Point, Glasgow Air force base, and in Iran. Ed remembers when he and Bud got kicked off the basketball team for drinking a pop and eating a candy bar during a game. We spent time camping , fishing, playing softbr4all and Boy Scout leaders-selling Christmas trees with the boys.
Bud was a,fun guy who loved to party and he and Judy were grand hosts.

Judy & family, so sorry to hear about the passing of Bud. Just loved that big guy.. I remember watching Bud and my Dad playing ” old timers” softball in Glasgow. Bud would visit with my Mom & Dad and we’d end up laughing ( in stitches ) over something Bud would come up with.. Bud was a good guy. Now he’s probably having a BS session with all his old buddies… Hang in there guys… In our families thoughts & prayers…The Vold and Maczkas

Michael Wong says
Boe, Jason, Judy and family–sorry I cannot be with you today to celebrate Bud’s life. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Bud was a big guy with a bigger heart. He gave his heart and soul to help make the Helena Small Fry Football league one of the premiere youth leagues in Montana. Bud spent countless hours making sure Small Fry players had the very best experience possible. Many hot August days you could find Bud sweating away in the football equipment shed providing cheerful and humerous advice to all. I’ll definitely miss Bud’s smile and sense of humor. We had many conversations and I would say that even though most of our discussions revolved around football, the expression and look in his eyes when he talked about his family really showed how important his family was to him and proud he was of his family. I feel blessed to have gotten to know him and especially blessed to help him introduce a game he loved so much to Boe and Jason. Wishing the Shuman family peace and comfort.

Dear Judy and family, I just happened across Bud’s obituary as I was trying to find dates on relatives marriages, births, etc. when I came across this. I am so sorry to hear of Bud passing away last year. He was a sweetheart and he also got me the job in Glasgow. Your whole family were great and always made me feel welcome. Your grandson’s name is the same as our oldest daughters son Kaden. It’s becoming more popular these days.
