Norma Mae Smith, 88, passed away July 29, 2016.
Norma was born in Radersburg, Montana on February 20, 1928 to Harvey and Pearl Barraugh. The family moved to Townsend, Montana where Norma attended school. She married Willis “Skip” Smith on April 24, 1948 in Sheridan, Wyoming.
Norma worked at the Mint Café in Townsend in her early years and then Lundy’s (now Van’s Thriftway). She started her life long career as a Ward Secretary at St. John’s Hospital moving to St. Peter’s Hospital until her retirement in 1990. Norma enjoyed her work and it is only fitting that she feels at home at Rocky Mountain Health Care since ‘it’ was the former St. John’s Hospital where she had spent so many years taking care of others.
Norma always had a smile on her face and a warm welcome for family and friends dropping by to visit. Norma’s cooking was the best; from the wonderful roasts to the fabulous caramels she made for the holidays. In the early years of marriage, Norma and Skip were active in bowling leagues, bingo and they were born to dance together Ballroom Style, never missing a beat.
Norma loved a beautiful yard. Her flower beds were bursting with color and the lawn groomed to perfection. Norma enjoyed working outdoors in the summer sun and taking care of her yard.
Family and friends were recipients of the beautifully crocheted Afghans that Norma created and often said when covering up in her Afghans, you couldn’t help but feel the love Norma put in every stitch.
Norma is preceded in death by her husband, Willis “Skip” Smith; parents Harvey and Pearl Barraugh and Brother Ronald Barraugh. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Wogamon of Townsend; a brother, Bill (Karen) Barraugh and Judy Barraugh of Helena. Her four children, Randy (Sharon) Smith, Sandra (Lance) Davis, Rick Smith Sr. and Michael Smith; her grandchildren, Cory (Chappell) Smith, Treavor (Briana) Smith, Shauna Davis, Rick (Amy) Smith Jr., Christopher Plummer and Tyler Smith. She has five great granddaughters, Kayla and McKenzie French, Jazmyn, Cori and Kendall Smith. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Norma had a way of making us all feel special and loved. We will miss her and know that she is in a better place and at peace. We love you Mom, Grandma, and Grandma GG.

Randy, Sandy, Rick and Mike, and families,
I am so sorry for your loss. Norma was like second mother to me down on Hudson Street and the world is a sadder place for her passing. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry I will not be there for the service but am in Portland for my daughter’s wedding this weekend. Know that is one of the few things that would keep me away and know also I will be with you there in spirit.

Sandy and Mike-
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I enjoyed Norma when I worked at the nursing home and seeing her still when I would be up visiting my dad.

Prayers for your family. Our God has promised a resurrection of our loved ones. John 6:40 tells of this promise. Hope you find some comfort from this scripture.

Randy, Sandy, Rick and Mike, and families,
We are so sorry for your mothers passing. As with Jim, Norma was like second mother to me down on Hudson Street. She always had a way of making things like it was all going to be “Just Fine”. She will surely be missed. We had a chance to visit with her at Rocky Mountain this past spring. Norma was a dear soul. Your in our thoughts and prayers.
