On the afternoon of September 6th, 2020, Agnes “Aggie” Hunter passed away peacefully of natural causes. Aggie was 96 years old, one month shy of her 97th birthday. She passed in the house she lived in all her life, her beloved family home on Hiawatha in the area of Helena formerly known as Kenwood.
Aggie was born in Helena, Montana on October 8th, 1923. She was the seventh out of eight children born to Dr. William Hunter and his wife Florine (Flo).
Aggie attended Kessler Elementary School until the great earthquake of 1935 made the school unsafe. At one point, Aggie and her classmates attended school in an old railroad box car, before heading to Seattle to finish their elementary education. Aggie graduated from Helena High in 1941.
Aggie was preceded in death by her father, William, mother Florine, sisters Janet, Margaret (Peggy), Fae and brothers Lloyd, Robert, Dan and Bill.

I worked at the bank in the mid 70’s and Aggie was truly one of my favorite people. I don’t recall ever seeing her without a smile on her face and something nice to say to whoever she was talking to. She’s a classic example of grace and love. Prayers to all those who have lost a great treasure in their lives.

I remember Aggie and Peggy from childhood, my parents being good friends with the family and, we were all “westsiders.” I loved their house and enjoyed visiting. They were wonderful people who contributed to the history of this city. They are all together at last. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Pat Lieberg Reichert

As a child growing up in Helena in the 50s I remember Aggie both from the Parrot and the bank. In fact my Mom told me as a little kid I called it Aggies Bank :). I remember her as such a warm person and she always acknowledged me which is pretty cool when you are a small person.

My mom banked at ” her ” bank. She was so sweet, I loved her smile and enthusiasm. We called her the lollipop lady, she always gave us one when mom came there to do her banking. Funny, I was just telling someone about the lollipop lady a short time ago and wondered if she was still alive. Thank you Aggie, you were such a lovely gracious lady to us “kids”. RIP.

The death of Aggie, like for all of us, was inevitable. But that doesn’t remove the emotions. There is much to said about Aggie, but for me it could fill volumes. She was musical – where many public facilities create piped in music – Aggie filled both the Parrot and the Union Bank with her beautiful chords! Her kind devotion to heaven and earth was boundless. Her friendship was cherished. Standing at the Mother Church in August, 1983 gave me the opportunity to understand and respect her faithful beliefs. There always was meant to be, a place for Aggie.

I remember Aggie from many years ago. She was the warmest person. Aggie was very kind. She and my Mom and aunts were very good friends. They all belonged to the same church for many, many, years. They attended the same school and learned in the box cars. I worked at the Union Bank with her. Aggie always made my day at the bank. With my. Living away from my parents , it always felt good to hear her sweet and caring voice. Aggie was a good example for others and inspired many people. She was a hard worker but always gave the impression it was her pleasure.
I will miss the Hunter girls out and about. I know Peggy had a firm belief and I know she and her family are together again.
