Alfred C. Cook, 82, died peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital on April 15, 2015 with his wife, Carol, by his side.
Al was born in Absorakee, Montana on November 14, 1932. He was the eighth of eleven children born to William and Althea Cook. Al graduated from Willow Creek High School in 1951 and earned his B.S. in Agricultural Education from MSU in 1958. Al joined the Army and was honorably discharged in 1961. Al married Vivian Smith in 1955 and they had five children. Al later married Carol Thompson on June 22, 1985.
As a young man Al had a passion for bronc and bull riding in rodeos winning several awards and belt buckles. After graduating from college he taught in White Sulphur Springs and Saco. He sold cars in Bozeman and later moved to Helena to sell cars for Capital Ford. In 1997 Al retired from selling Yellow Page Advertisements throughout the western United States.
Prior to Carol retiring, his mission was to purchase a travel trailer and decide where they would spend the winters in Arizona. For the next 15 years, Al and Carol enjoyed meeting up with Arizona friends and made trips to several small towns to find the best food, especially apple pie and banana splits.
Throughout his life Al volunteered as; a 4-H judge, as a big for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Helena, and several other service groups. Al was an active member of the Helena Gold Rush Lions Club and held several different officer positions.
He enjoyed several hobbies of wood working, stained glass, reading, construction, and yardwork, maintenance work at the Desert Gold Resort RV Park in Arizona, traveling and eating “cowboy pie” with his grandchildren.
Al is survived by his wife, Carol; sister Maxine Dykman of Harrison; his children, Karen Cook Ore (Bruce King) of Bozeman, Ken J. Cook of Bozeman, Karla Cook of Helena, and Kevin Cook of Boulder, Colorado; step-daughters Jeanette Modrow of Helena and Norma (Tom) Stroeher of Spokane, Washington; nephew George Roseboom of Helena, grandchildren Daniel (Jenny) Ore of Bozeman, Christy Modrow (Andy Gill) of Helena, Janae (Donald) Grotbo of Helena, Colin Modrow of Bozeman, Lindsey Stroeher and Ryan Stroeher of Spokane, Washington; great-granddaughters Makenzie and Abigail Grotbo of Helena and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Al is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, five brothers, his daughter Kara Li Cook, grandson Brandon Craver, son-in-law David Ore and son-in-law Bob Modrow.
A memorial service celebrating Al’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22nd at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N. Montana Ave. A reception will follow the memorial service in the social center of the funeral home.
