Alice Elaine Gilbert passed away August 28 at Helena, Montana. She was born October 6, 1940, the daughter of Rosella and Leon Wartick, in Wausaukee, Wisconsin. She was the oldest of seven children in the family. The family later moved from the family farm to Beloit, Wisconsin and then to Eureka, Montana. After high school, she worked as a shift supervisor for Admiral Corporation in Chicago, Illinois. After returning to Montana, she worked as a bookkeeper for Chevrolet dealerships in Whitefish and Helena and for Helena Trailer Sales.
Alice loved children and was delighted to have her nieces and nephews visit and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandson. This led her to be very active with Helena Last Chance Kiwanis whose primary mission is serving children. She served on many committees and officer positions and was a faithful worker at the steak sandwich booth. She enjoyed doing genealogy and developed an extensive library on both sides of our families. She also served as president of both the Gallatin and Lewis & Clark Genealogical Societies. Alice loved to read and enjoyed the old westerns on television.
She married Sam Gilbert at Eureka, Montana in 1975. She is survived by daughter Heather (Walt) and stepdaughter Marlene (Chris); grandchildren Tyler (Rachel), Stephen, Cody, Hunter, Mathew and Ryan; great-grandson Brogan; sisters Evelyn, Shirley and Nancy (Richard), brothers Bill and John (Marsha) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepson Kenneth and brother Jerry.
We offer special thanks to Shelly Pulse for her support and friendship.
A celebration of Alice’s life will be held at the family cabin east of Clyde Park, Montana on September 11th.

I am so sorry to learn of Alice’s passing. We lived next door to her in Bozeman years ago & she babysat for me at times. She was always so kind to me & my girls. I learned from her when I was a young mother living away from my own mother. Please know you are all in my thoughts & prayers at the loss of such a lovely lady.

Alice was one of the most important parts of my childhood. My fondest memory is playing Trivial Pursuit at their house in Bozeman. My family lived in Northwest Bozeman and it was always very exotic to drive past Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and the stadium at MSU to get to Sam & Alice’s house. Alice had amazing eyes that almost closed when she smiled big or laughed. They gave me comfort. If us kids were getting into trouble I can still see her eyes open wide as she tilted her head to the left as she looked down at us. But she was never too hard on us. She saved that for Heather 😉 I am so glad I was able to enjoy a fabulous picnic with Alice on July 23rd. Her comments were brief and sometimes hard to hear but she made me laugh so many times. She was a great lady and I will miss her.

Visiting with Alice up at the cabin was always a highlight of our family trips to Montana. She laughed easily and often and made everyone welcome. I’m grateful that we were able to have one more visit in July.

We’re so sorry to hear of Alice’s passing. We have had many good times with she and Sam over the years. Kiwanis conferences, the steak booth at the fair were a lot of fun because of Alice. We also got our little dog, Oreo, from Heather and Alice because she knew Gary had always wanted a Boston Terrier. She was a very special lady and we will miss her beautiful smile and cheerful personality. Our love and prayers are being sent to Sam, Heather, Cody and Hunter.

My heart aches at hearing of the loss of your dear Alice. She always had a warm smile and a laugh for everyone. You two were my favorites couple at the steak booth and I always looked forward every summer to working with you. I have such fond memories of great frivolity working alongside you both. My deepest sympathies are with you during this time of sorrow. My love and prayers go out to you and your family Sam.

Sam and family . Although my interactions with Alice were only for the last few years that we teamed up with Last Chance to support the Steak booth at the Fairgrounds it was obvious she was the anchor of the project, spending many hours managing the till. Sam, you and your club did an amazing job for years keeping that booth going. I could tell how close you and Alice were as a couple and the two of you were a Kiwanis ‘”power Couple”. God Bless you as you grieve Alice’s passing on to the other side. Thank you Lord for her tremendous service to others through Kiwanis and in her work and family life. Alice will be greatly missed. Blessings to you all.
