Obituary for Alvin Herbert Hazen
Alvin Herbert (Herb) Hazen was born to Logan Rhodes and Florence Mae (Bruesch) Hazen on July 10, 1934. He was the youngest of seven children raised on the family farm on Highwood’s North Bench. He was taught there by his older sister, Ruth, then continued his education in Fort Benton where he graduated in 1952. His first winter out of High School he traveled extensively, meeting lots of family and seeing many of the fifty states. He eventually accomplished his goal of seeing all fifty states. The next year he started college, studying mechanics. While in college he met Judy, the love of his life and spent the next 70+ wonderful years with her. Herb and Judy (Judith Mary Holm) were united in marriage on August 17, 1954.
Herb worked at farming, auto and farm implement and parts sales, and thirty years at his son’s family greenhouse, nursery and floral business.
While he worked many long hours most of his life, he took every opportunity to tour the beautiful Montana countryside with his wife, children and visiting family and friends. Whenever time and budget allowed, he would take Judy and whatever family he could on cross country journeys, a tradition he continued with his grandsons. He loved taking his grandsons to the country for driving practice.
He and Judy were happy to be able to attend many of the activities and events in which their grandsons and great grandchildren participated. Some in Montana as well as on both the east and west coasts.
Throughout his life one of Herb’s greatest joys was his Catholic faith. Inspired by his older brother George and his soon to be wife Judy, he took instructions and joined the church, embracing it whole-heartedly.
Over their seventy years of marriage they lived in many places around Montana from Valier (10 years) to Sidney, Highwood, Lewistown (17 years), Fort Benton (30 years) and Helena (8 years). Everywhere they lived they enjoyed making many friends, several of which they keep in touch.
He was preceded in death by his parents Logan and Mae, sisters Nettie (Harry) Brost and Ruth (Cornie) Vermulum, brothers Donald, George (Ruth), Logan (Imojene), Dan (Maxine) Hazen, nieces Chely and Joan, nephews Duane, Everett and Mike, in-laws Everett and Margaret Holm, Jim Hayes, Terry and Carolyn Holm and Al Roland.
Herb is survived by his wife Judy, sisters in-law Sandy Hayes and Rita Roland, daughter Lori (Dennis) Mayernik, sons Don, Mark (Maggie), Jerry (Patti), 20 nieces and nephews, 12 grandsons: Aaron, Marvin, Brandon, Cory, Kelly, John, Matt, Garth, Nathan, Kendall, Zach and Michael, their spouses and 37 great grandchildren.

Uncle Alvin, I first met him in 1963 as I was 12 and would turn 13 later that summer. Uncle Alvin was dressed in western style cowboy clothes. I have had items of cowboy clothes to wear ever since. When ever I visited Montana Uncle Alvin was always encouraging me to move to Montana.

I only new Herb enough to say “hello,” but I knew he and his wife must be good people because of their wonderful children, all of whom were friendly and kind.
