He was born in Denver, CO on October 9, 1933, to Arnold A. Boettcher and Helen M. Wyatt. He was an Eagle Scout, graduated from the University of Colorado and, after service in the US Army, pursued a career as a geologist in the US Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency. He met the love of his life, Frances Louise “Lou” Rogers, while in college during 1954, and married November 23, 1955 in Denver at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
John and Lou had two children, John Peter Boettcher and Katherine “Katie” Ann Boettcher Lane. In the pursuit of his career he moved his family periodically throughout the Rocky Mountain region, but with each new home, John and Lou together, were the rock to which their family was firmly tethered. As a result of this lifestyle he leaves behind countless friends throughout the country.
He loved to laugh. He was fiercely passionate about his family, especially his wife and partner, Lou. This passion did not stop with Peter and Kathy, but extended to his grandchildren, as well as his nieces and nephews. Known as “Tampta” to the entire youth community at Capital and Belgrade High Schools, from drama to athletics. John and Lou rarely missed any outing in which there were grandchildren involved, especially standing by the finish line offering congratulations and a big bandana to towel off with. He became a father and later a grandfather to all the friends of his children and grandchildren. He confidently provided whatever was asked for. Separated by miles from his two grandchildren in Connecticut, he stayed connected through frequent visits, phone calls, and emails. He succeeded in staying truly connected and his passing leaves a loving scar.
He volunteered wherever he could, as a Scouter, chauffeur, line judge, and most recently at Helena Food Share. is interests included camping, fishing, tennis, and skiing; interests he shared with his family.
His greatest love, though, was his wife of 52 years, Lou, and all the wonderful times they had together.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents. He is survived by his son, John Peter Boettcher and his wife, Janna, of Southbury, CT, his daughter, Katherine “Katie” Ann Boettcher Lane of Belgrade; grandchildren, Kelsey Lane, Trevor Lane, Claire Boettcher, and John Boettcher; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Ever faithful, he was one of this life’s true friends. He will be sorely missed by countless souls whose lives he touched.

I enjoyed playing tennis with John for many years. He was always cheerful even after the passing of Lou. We moved from Helena several years ago so have not had recent contact with John.
