On the morning of October 7th, 2024, Barbara “Barb” Jean Schock passed away peacefully at home, due to a long illness. Her devoted, loving husband of 54 years and their youngest son were by her side. Barbara was 88 years old.
Barbara was born in Seattle Washington, to James H. Webster and Judy Hutchison-Webster. They moved to Lewistown Montana when she was young. In 1953 Barbara married Donald D Abel and they had 4 beautiful children, Cindy, Curtis, Melody, and Brian. In 1962 they picked up and moved to Wisconsin. A year later, they were divorced and Barbara moved back to Montana to be close to her sister. It was in Billings that she met the love of her life, Erwin “Swede” Schock Jr. Barbara gave birth to Chris Schock in 1966. Swede and Barbara were married on March 21st, 1970, and welcomed into her family 2 stepchildren, Gary and Larry Schock, bringing this family to a total of 9. The family moved to Helena to pursue Barb’s passion in the medical field, graduating with Honors from Helena Vocational College for Nursing in 1970, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Barbara had a huge, kind and loving heart. She loved nursing and caring for people. She was very passionate, unselfish, and empathetic. She always put others and their needs before her own. There are truly so many stories and wonderful things about Barbara. She could have her moments and stand firm on her beliefs, but never wavered from being a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandparent. Barbara loved her flowers and plants. She loved the butterflies and wind chimes that lined her gardens and home. Her treasured gift to every grand, and great grand baby, were grandma’s individual and unique Christmas Stockings. She loved to read, knit, cross stitch, cook/bake, and she loved the Lord. She had a passion for singing and was part of Helena’s “Sweet Adelines” as a soprano.
Barbara survived by her loving spouse, Erwin “Swede” Schock. Her children Cindy (Phil) Knapp, Curtis (Cherie) Abel, Melody (Steve) Reich, Brian (the late Helen) Abel, Chris (Elisa) Schock, Larry (Debbie) Schock, and Gary Schock. Also, her sister Connie Miller and brother Bill Sheldon, who reside in Yellowstone County, Montana. There are too many nieces and nephews to name but be assured there are several: she had 15 grandkids and 21 great-grandkids. She was preceded in death by her mother, Judy Hutchison- Webster; father, James Webster and stepfather, Ross Sheldon; sisters, Shirley and Lucille.
Barbara will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and we will always cherish our memories. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
A memorial service celebrating Barbara’s life will be held Saturday October 12th, 2024, at 3:00 P.M. at Anderson Stevenson & Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N Montana Ave Helena MT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.

Swede and family,
Barb was such a sweet lady and always made me feel special. Growing up across the street I always enjoyed her beautiful yard, a friendly hello, or a random snack. When I moved away and had a child Barb made her a beautiful blanket, and often sent her cute cards. Kendra struggled to say her “r’s” so she called Barb “Bob”. From that point on all the cards and mail she sent always had Love, Bob. It still makes me smile. She was an amazing lady and will be missed for sure. I hope you find comfort in knowing how special she was to so many.
