Bernard A. Hewitt
Bernard Arthur Anthony Hewitt was called to the Lord and passed away on March 17th, 2012, St. Patrick’s Day. He was born on July 24, 1971 to Bernie and Artie Hewitt, and was raised in Walkerville, Mt., and its suburb of Butte, along with his sister, Anna.
He attended Blaine Elementary and Butte Central Junior High, and graduated from Butte Central High in 1989. While at Central, Bernie played football for the Maroons and was Student Body President in his senior year. After graduation he attended Carroll College in Helena, and graduated with a degree in Business Administration, and an area of concentration in Classical Languages in 1993.
Bernie enjoyed playing baseball, football and sports in general and was very competitive. In fact, he was an excellent pitcher as a youth and made it to the All Star Team. His joy was also found in simple pleasures of riding his bike and caring for his dogs and lighting off fireworks whether you were prepared for participating in the event or not! He loved being with people, and when he walked into a room, he would light it up instantaneously. Everybody would be smiling and laughing, and no one could resist his jokes or charm or forget his hardy, heartfelt laughs.
Bernie “Bud,” took pride in his family and would not let anything stand in his way when it came to family reunions, visiting family or making it to all of his children’s events. He was a great father to Cedric, Austyn and Gavin Hewitt. He loved them with all his heart and sincerely tried to do anything he could to make them happy, responsible and fulfilled. He was also a fine uncle to his favorite nieces, Carly, Morgen and Braelyn, the daughters of his sister, Anna, and a proud member of the Hewitt Clan in Butte. He was also a member of St. Lawrence and St. Patrick Parishes in Butte while growing up, and of the Cathedral of St. Helena while residing in Helena, Mt.
What the children will remember the most about their father is his pride. He was proud regarding the appearance of his house (we washed the siding together once a month), or his yard (we would patrol the neighborhood to make sure our yard was the greenest), or how his children behaved (firm handshakes and look them in the eye). He demonstrated this pride, and many other characteristics, that helped them prepare for life. He wanted them to be ready to face hardships. He did just that. You will be missed, Dad. Love, Cedric, Austyn and Gavin.
Bernie’s work, principally in the insurance industry, took him to various parts of the Country, but he generally spent most of his professional life in Helena and at the State Fund. While there, he earned his Associates Degree and his C.P.C.U. designation as well.
He is survived by his three children and his former wife, Tomiko Burton-Hewitt; his mother, father, sister and her husband, Brian Holbein; as well as nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and many cousins who will miss him greatly along with Msgr. Kevin O’Neill.
Mass of Christian Burial will be noon Monday, March 26th at the Cathedral of St. Helena. Rite of Committal will follow in the Columbarium Niche at Resurrection Cemetery with a reception to follow in the Brondel Center located in the lower level of the Cathedral. In lieu of flowers the family suggests and would appreciate yours gifts in Bernie’s name to Carroll College Athletics 1601 N. Benton Avenue, Helena, Montana 59601. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.aswfuneralhome.com

My thoughts and support go out to Bernie’s Children and the rest of his extended family. I did not know him well, but the few times I was around him he lit up the room and made a positive impression. I will never watch the Saturday Night Live skit of Blue Oyster Cult’s Don’t Fear the Reaper about Christopher Walken wanting “more cowbell” from Will Ferrell and not think of him. Bernie was a devoted father and great brother to my wife. Now that he is away from the constant tormentors of his life, may he rest in peace.

I love you!
Love your favorite niece

My heart goes out to all of you during this very difficult time. What wonderful memories that you have, something that no one can take away.
The Bible holds out such a wonderful hope and promise for Bernard, and we know it will happen for sure because God cannot lie. Titus 1:2
“If a man die, shall he live again?” asked the man Job long ago. (Job 14:14, King James Version) Perhaps you, too, have wondered about this. How would you feel if you knew that a reunion with your loved ones was possible right here on earth under the best of conditions?
Well, the Bible makes the promise: “Your dead ones will live…They will rise up.” And the Bible also says: “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.” Isiah 26:19; Psalm 37:29
To have real confidence in such promisess, we need to answer some basic questions: Why do people die? Where are the dead? And how can we be sure they can live again?
Please feel free to contact me and I will share scriptures with you.

I was so sorry to learn of Bernie’s passing, my sincere condolences to Anna and the Hewitt family. I was a classmate of Bernie’s at Butte Central and Carroll College. Bernie would always have a smile, a joke or a funny story to share when I would see him. I especially remember starting school our senior year together doing the announcements over the PA system at Central – I could rarely get through my section without Bernie making me laugh. It was a nice way to start the day. He was a good person and will be surely missed.
