Betty Jane Lutey Algard went to the loving arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on June 13, 2013, after a courageous battle with congestive heart failure. Betty Jane Lutey was born November 25, 1924 to Mable E. and William H. Lutey in Helena, MT. Betty was the third of ten children born to that union.
Betty attended Helena schools and graduated from Helena High School in 1943. Betty was united in marriage to Hans Harold Algard on April 11, 1947 at St. Paul’s Methodist Parsonage in Helena, MT. They were married for 66 years and embodied the Scripture in Mark 10:9 “what therefore God hath joined together let not man put asunder.”
Betty worked for the Montana Department of Livestock in the Brand Inspection Bureau as the Deputy Recorder of Marks and Brands for 40 years, retiring in 1982. Betty was very respected and was known for her strong work ethic and follow through.
Betty loved animals and took exceptional care of “Prince” her white German Shepherd, “Nauba” and “Fang” her Norwegian Elkhounds, and her 3 stray cats “Mama Cat”, “Tig” and “Tag”. She always enjoyed seeing “Griz” Mark’s golden retriever.
Betty loved to dance with Hans and they were naturals, especially doing the Jitterbug. Betty and Hans attended Our Redeemers Lutheran Church and have been members for 34 years. Betty was also a member of the Lutheran Women’s Association and was an avid cookie baker for church and family.
Betty loved family and hosted many family gatherings at her home in the Helena valley. Betty was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed! She was our family historian and if anyone had a question the standard response was “Let’s ask Betty, she remembers all the dates and details.”
Betty is survived by her husband Hans, her sister Marlene J. (Keith) Swenson, sister Myrtle L. Murfitt, brother Chadwin H. Lutey, sister in law Joyce Lutey, brother in law Pat Leary, and Mark Johnson and his faithful Golden Retriever, “Griz”. Betty is also survived by over 50 nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters: Mable W. Wegner, Genevieve Young, Ellen R. Leary, brothers, Selmer G. Lutey, William S. Lutey, and Stanley P. Lutey; sister-in-laws, Florence Lutey and Connie Lutey; brother-in-laws, Howard Wegner, Howdy Murfitt, and Leo Young.
