Carl Leland Engstedt suffered a fatal heart attack on August 10, 2016 while on a vacation in Polson, MT to celebrate his birthday with side-kick, Marie.
Carl was born August 6, 1945, in Butte, MT. He was the 2nd child of Leland Edward Engstedt and Thelma Boundy Engstedt. Growing up on Yew Street in McQueen, Butte, Carl enjoyed Boy Scouts, fishing, camping, swimming and going to the Columbia Gardens. He attended Butte High where he was on the swim team and played trumpet in the band. Carl achieved his Eagle Scout when he was 17.
In 1966, Carl married Ellen Nielsen. They adopted twins, Eric and Christina, in 1972. Carl and Ellen later divorced. In 1984, Carl married Marie Near Crum.
Carl enjoyed being outdoors and worked for the Department of Highways for 30 years, retired, and then worked for Stahly Engineering for 15 years as a surveying engineer/project manager. Some of his work included the “new” York Bridge, widening McDonald Pass, building sections of I-15 such as Basin and Boulder Hill, redoing Highway 12 (from Avon to Garrison), and revamping the historic 400 block of Last Chance Gulch, just to name a few.
Carl closely followed baseball, football, boxing and Jeff Gordon, but was most passionate about watching his grandkids in cheerleading, baseball, basketball, football, softball, track, cross country and gymnastics.
Carl was steadfast in his dedication to his family. He never missed a celebration, a game, or a family gathering. He was a devoted father, stepfather, grandfather and life partner. Carl was a mentor to many, offering guidance, support and sage advice to young employees on road crews, to the Helena Boy Scout Troop 206 and most importantly, to his kids and treasured grandkids. A man of honor, integrity, grace and humility, Carl was a loyal companion, and a constant pillar of support for all who knew him and loved him. He took all things in stride, even when the Yankees lost the ’03 World Series.
Carl was a metastatic colon cancer survivor, undergoing chemo every 3 weeks for ten years – a true testament to his grit, perseverance and zest for life.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, Dale Nielsen, Bill Tighe, and Motoko Nielsen. He is survived by his beloved partner of 32 years, Marie Engstedt, daughter, Christina Engstedt (Tom Burgess); son, Eric Engstedt (Desirée Tietje); stepson, Corey (Darci) Crum; stepdaughter, Kelly (James) Perkins; his grandchildren, Tiana Pallister, Talon Pallister, Gabriella Weida, Matt Burgess, Erika Burgess, Brigett Burgess, Kennedy Engstedt, Sienna Engstedt, Colt Tietje, Glory Tietje, Austin Jonas, Taylor Wells, Courtney Crum, Makayla Perkins, Shyanne Perkins, Lexie Perkins; his sister Carolee Tighe; his in-laws, Elizabeth Hemen, Linda (Greg) Vandersnick, Tim (Pat) Near, Carol (Dave) Bock, Lyle (Lynn) Nielsen; and several nieces and nephews.

I’m so, so sad to read about Carl’s passing. We were very distant relatives and much to my pleasure we got in touch with each other many years ago. His great grandfather and my great grandmother were siblings born in Jamtland, Sweden. My great granmother stayed in Sweden but all the others emigrated to USA along with their parents. It was so nice to be in touch with Carl and I think we both felt bonded in a way. I noticed I didn’t recieve a Christmas card this last Christmas and now I know why. So so sad.
