Charles William “Bill” Wolfe passed away on May 19, 2011 of Congestive Heart Failure at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena Montana. Bill was born September 21, 1926 in Sewickley, PA to Dr. Charles and Mary Wolfe. He loved to go fishing with his dad in Canada and Florida and always had a story to share about there special times.
Following graduation from Valley Forge Military Academy in PA, Bill served in the US Army during WWII , stationed in Hawaii. He then attended Westminster College and graduated from Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA. In 1952 he moved to Miami, FL. His two children, Jeffrey and Laurie were born during his first marriage. He started his long, dedicated and productive career in law enforcement with Miami Dade (FL) Sheriff’s office. He served predominantly as a homicide detective and polygraph examiner. He then worked for Wackenhut Security Corp. conducting internal security investigations. The family moved to St Petersburg where he was chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice at St. Petersburg Jr College, a program that he planned and developed..
In January of 1970 he moved to Helena, Montana and began served as Deputy Director of the Governor’s Board of Crime Control, Montana Dept. of Justice. He evolved the Montana police training standards and certification to a professional level currently being maintained. On April 28, 1977 he and Sharon Morris married in Helena where they just celebrated 34 wonderful years together. Scott and Rosanna McTaggart from Sharon’s first marriage joined the family.
In 1981 Bill and Sharon headed to Florida where he became the director of Police Applicant Screening Services for 13 law enforcement agencies in Pinellas County. In 1996 they retired and moved back to the beautiful Big Sky Country of Helena.
Bill was a gifted writer publishing: A Gazette with the Board of Crime Control that was distributed to 11 nations, ministries newsletters, and various other articles including his passion for vitamin D. He enjoyed fishing with his dad and son, hiking many hours in the Scratch Gravels, Square dancing and calling, loved horses and growing in his faith. He loved being with his family and spending time sharing stories and having laughing spells that became painful. He had the best sense of humor and kept a positive attitude about life.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Charles and Mary Wolfe. He is survived by, his wife and soul mate Sharon, his only sibling Virginia Johns, his children Jeffrey Wolfe of Boise, ID, Laurie (Carl) Quist of Carnation WA, Scott (Eileen) McTaggart of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Rosanna (Daniel) Richardson of Sunrise, FL. Grand children Michael (Lorie) Quist, Amy (Darren) Fields, Caitlyn Quist, Kelli Quist, Rebecca (David) Temple, Jessica (Steve) Orsland, Danielle Wolfe, Scott McTaggart, Cody McTaggart, and Chance Gruber. Great-Grandchildren Carson William “C.W.” Fields, Colby Fields, Adelaide Quist and a great granddaughter due in June. Other survivors include nieces and nephews Mike (Mary) Johns, Rebecca (Carl Ambrose) Johns, Tom (Jill) Johns, and Kathy Johns.
Memorial service and Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 22 at Covenant United Methodist Church located at 2330 Broadway in Helena MT, followed by a reception. Interment at the Corvallis Cemetery will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials may be sent to Covenant United Methodist Church or the Hospice of St. Peter’s Hospital, 201 S.
