Cori N. Smith, age 16, of East Helena, passed away November 1, 2016.
Cori Nicole Smith was born on May 25, 2000, to Rick and Amy Smith Jr. She had a fiercely loyal and protective older sister Jazmyn. Jazmyn and Cori were almost inseparable from the day she arrived.
Cori was the sunshine in ours and so many other lives. She never wanted anyone to feel alone or sad and went out of her way to help others. Whenever she walked into a room it would light up with her bubbly, bright, fun, and loving personality.
Cori attended grade school in East Helena. She played competitive basketball with her sister from the time she was 8 years old. The basketball was as tall as her little legs at the time. Cori continued basketball and played for East Valley Middle School all three years and for Helena High both her freshman and sophomore year. She always wanted to do her best at anything she took on. She had so many friends we couldn’t begin to list them all. Cori’s upbeat and goofy attitude will be sorely missed.
Cori is survived by her mother and father, Rick and Amy Smith; sister, Jazmyn; Grandparents, Rick Smith Sr. and Debra Petek of East Helena, Steve and Breta Chesley of Helena; Great Grandparents, Peter and Catherine Petek of East Helena, Jay Chesley of Idaho Falls and Betty Branham of Camden, S.C.; Uncle Mike and Aunt Kristi; cousins, Kiersten and Jared Chesley of Elgin, S.C.; Aunt Shauna and Uncle John; cousins Kaitlin and Megan Woitkielewicz of Miles City, and many more loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home is taking care of Cori and a viewing will be available to the public on Monday, November 7th from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N. Montana Ave.
A Service will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 512 Logan St., on Tuesday, November 8th at 2 p.m. Burial will follow the service at St. Ann’s Cemetery in East Helena and a reception location will be announced at the funeral.

To Cori’s family —
There just are no words adequate enough to express the pain we are all feeling over the loss of Cori. We are thankful for the wonderful memories she left behind, and for being a part of our lives even if it was just for a brief time. Amber simply adored Cori and loved being her teammate for two years at Helena High. Frieda & I loved watching her play basketball. Her passion was so contagious. You always knew good things were about to happen when Cori was on the floor. There was rarely a time when she didn’t have a smile on her face. Take solace in knowing she meant a lot to so many people. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always.

Rick, Amy, and Jazmyn,
My heart and soul aches for you. I didn’t know Cori, but reading her obituary reminded me of my Jacob. It is clear to me that there was much love in your family and that Cori knew that. I don’t know that there is any loss as tragic as the loss of a child. Although the road ahead will be difficult, it is doable, and I believe that you can find joy. Know that you are all loved and please lean on the supportive family and friends willing to do for you during this difficult time. I understand what you’re going through and can be a shoulder to lean on.
Sending prayers and blessings,
Bill Wheeler

I remember Jazmyn coming to ERD with sale projects for school, and you were with her. Suddenly one year you were the one selling beautiful live garlands and seeds for redwoods and such. I could never, ever refuse you or your sister. You both were so very sweet. Now I will be remembering the joy you brought. Now I will remember your open smile and your welcoming face. May you rest in peace in the arms of our Lord Jesus.

Amy and Family, My heart aches for you at this time of tragedy and such sorrow. While I never was blessed to have met Cori I know that any child of yours Amy had to bring smiles to every room and I know from the great sadness at HHS that she was amazing and is missed so very much. May you find strength in your close friends and family during this sad time and forever keep the memory of your child burning bright!
Breana Kleppelid says
Cori and I met in elementary school. From there everyday, Cori and I’s relationship grew and grew. In middle school Cori and I bonded with the love for the game of basketball. Cori and I both made the freshman basketball team for the Helena High Bengals. I loved playing with Cori and I loved being around her. Our friendship really took off from there on out. We’ve been best friends ever since. Cori loved having friends over at her house and we all enjoyed being there. Her cute little dimples always made me smile. She made me feel safe and loved. There are so many memories we have together. I would always try to bring a smile and laugh to her face whether it be a cheesy joke, or just being my goony self, she loved it. She loved the summer with all her heart. We both tried to make the most of our summer to take it all in and enjoy it. Which if you ask me was pretty successful. We would lay out and soak up the sun and listen to our favorite country songs, and talk for hours on end. Cori I miss you. And Cori I will never stop loving you. You are my sunshine, you are my light. Thank you for the nonstop laughing, movie nights, late night drives, and all the other amazing things we did. I will love and cherish all our memories Cori. I will never forget you Cori doodle bug. ❤️

I am so sorry for your family and this community’s loss. You are in my thoughts.

I was fortunate to coach Cori in elementary school girls basketball. She was a leader on the team with her high energy, big smile, encouragement to other kids and great attitude.
