Daniel “Dan” Bowman Smelko passed away at home surrounded by family March 21, 2018. He was born May 14, 1943 in Youngstown, Ohio to Albert and Kathryn Smelko. Dan always lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed team roping, packing mules into the back country, fly fishing, making sausage and especially supporting and cheering on the Montana Grizzly football team. Dan himself was a four-year letterman for the University of Montana and enjoyed all things Montana. He was preceded in death by his only brother, Albert. Dan leaves behind his beloved wife Terry, his son, Bo; his daughter-in-law Christa, as well as his grandchildren Ayden and Anya.
Dan was famous for telling stories and making timely quotes. The last week with Dan was special, as many friends and family were able to reach out and spend time with him over the phone and in person. During this time his life was celebrated with laughter as he told many stories and reminisced about his adventures. When asked about his life, he proudly indicated he had no regrets and said, “it was one hell of a ride!”
Cremation has taken place; however, services will not be held immediately. Per his wishes, a gathering for friends and family will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 16th at the Smelko Residence to tell stories and in true Smelko style, “Have a drink on Dan”.
