In Memory Of

Dolores I. Hohn, age 91, of Helena

May 25, 1934 – January 3, 2026

Dolores Irene (Barker) Hohn was born on May 25, 1934 in Helena, Montana, to Fred R. Barker and Nellie Irene (Cramer) Barker.  Mom died peacefully at home on January 3, 2026, surrounded by family.

Mom lived her entire life in Helena.  Mom attended the original Central Elementary School and graduated from Helena High School.

While in high school, mom worked at the RB Drive In as a carhop.  It was there that she met the love of her life, Raymond Hohn.  They were married in Helena on November 30, 1952.  Ray was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Etain, France.  Dodie joined him there in 1955.  While there, Mom became a member of the Catholic Church and remained in the Church until her death.  Their first daughter, Cheryl, was born while they were in France.  They returned to Helena after Ray was discharged and soon two more girls, Susan and Kathy, joined the family.  Dodie was the ultimate stay-at-home mom.  Mom was involved in every activity with the girls.  She made sure they took lessons and learned to swim, even tho she did not particularly like the water and could not swim herself.  Mom served on the PTA for many years at Kessler School while the girls attended elementary school.  Mom was a Bluebird leader, a 4-H leader, a religious education leader and  belonged to Extension Homemakers and Junior HiLo club.

The family spent many summers camping, fishing, swimming and boating at Canyon Ferry Lake and Seeley Lake.  One summer the family vacation was a trip to Disneyland, pulling the camp trailer the whole distance.  The highlight was when Dodie and Ray were dancing on the Lawrence Welk show while the family watched a taping and that show was later played on TV.

Dodie worked for twenty-four years for the school district of Helena, retiring as the payroll clerk in June, 1994.  After retirement, Ray and Dodie did a lot of traveling.  They attended the Hostfest in Minot, North Dakota for many years and the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas every year for over ten years.  They pulled their trailer to Alaska and toured for an extended time.  They also enjoyed many cruises and made many lifelong friends on the cruises.  Ray and Dodie traveled many weekends to watch daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in a variety of sports and activities.  They were the best cheerleaders!

After Ray’s death in 2014, Dodie remained independent in the family home and still stayed active with her friends and card groups.  Mom was active with her Junior HiLo group,  women who have been friends since childhood (Frannie, Janie, Helen, Janet and Carolyn).

Mom was predeceased by her husband Ray, her parents Fred and Nellie Barker, Ray’s parents Jake and Alma Hohn, her sister Joan Anders and her nephew, Jay Anders.  Survivors include her daughter Cheryl (Frank) Boucher of Great Falls, their son Seth (Rebecca) and children Brian and Anna; their daughter Rebekah (Ryan) Anderson and son Ethan; daughter Susan (Wayne) Noem of Helena and their son Matthew (Erynn) and sons Tavin and Tyce; their daughter Myriah (Tobin) Tollett and sons Christopher and Parker; daughter Kathy Hohn (Chummer Matilla) of Helena, her son Jeffrey (Jennifer) DeMers and daughter Breanna, sons Jacob and James; her daughter Hillary (Jason) Hock and sons Jayden and Riley, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mom was very respected and loved by a lot of people but none more than her family, who will miss her greatly but know that she is in heaven with dad and they are dancing time away until we can join them in the two-step.

Donations can be made to the charity of your choice, if you so desire.  Public viewing will be from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13 at the Anderson Stevenson Wilke funeral home.  Vigil service will begin at 6:00 p.m. on January 13.  Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, January 14 at noon at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in East Helena, Montana.  A lunch will immediately follow the Mass with burial following the lunch reception.

Dodie and I met while attending water aerobics in 1996 (I was carrying my twins) and hit it off right away! She was kind, funny and had that beautiful smile. It was funny that I met her AND Sue at different times and was friends with each of them without knowing it for quite a while. I will miss lunches with her, Sue and my Mom. She was such a lovely person, inside and out. My prayers, thoughts and love go out to Sue, Dodie’s other family and all who mourn her loss.

    Cheryl, Susie, and Kathy,
My heart is with you and your families; I am so deeply saddened to hear of your mothers passing. Growing up next door to the Barker girls, my brother and I would not have become the same people without your mother’s love and guidance. We were so fortunate to have had her in our lives, may you find comfort; in always remembering the many cherished times you shared with her. I am sorry I cannot be with you to share in her service; please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. May her memory always bring you peace.
In gratitude and with deepest sympathy,
    Peggy (Whipple) McCarthy.

I always liked Dodie. Her mom, Nellie, and my mom, Emma, were in the High-Lows Club, a group of friends who celebrated birthdays and holidays throughout the year….including Ida Lundberg, Maudie McCalley, Mrs. Staniger, Mrs. Norling, and several others…a good group of ladies who hosted bridal and baby showers for the daughters, also. We got to meet the daughters and felt that we all knew each other, through the stories told by our mothers. Those truly were the good old days. With sympathy to the family,
    Donna Finstad
