Donald R. Short, age 94, passed away in Helena of natural causes on May 30, 2015. Don was born in Mitchell, Nebraska on November 17, 1920 to parents Robert and Elsie Short, but was practically a lifetime resident of Port Angeles, Washington. He graduated from Port Angeles Senior High in 1938, and 4 years later, married the love of his life, Venetia Ellen Turner on August 17, 1942. They had 5 children: Donald R. Short, Craig M. Short, Sandra L. Copenhaver, Steven R. Short, and Michelle D. Short.
Don worked at Middleton Auto Parts before going to work for Crown Zellerbach Pulp & Paper in Port Angeles until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends.
In 1965, Don and Venetia united with the Church of the Nazarene in Port Angeles, where they committed themselves to the work of God’s kingdom. Don particularly had a heart for children, working diligently in the summer camping ministry, as well as the church’s scouting ministry. He was deeply loved by the children whose lives he had the privilege of touching.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Short and Elsie Biber; his brother, Merlin; his sisters Virginia Ghea, Norene Cole, Roberta Leigh, Monnie Loy, Rose Marie Short, son Donald Short, daughter Michelle Short, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Venetia, sons Craig (Evelyn) Short, Steve (Linda) Short, daughter Sandy (Wally) Copenhaver, stepbrother David Biber, stepsister Cathy Stern, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4th in the committal shelter at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison. Donations may be made in Don’s memory to Helena Nazarene Church, 117 Valley Drive, Helena, MT 59601.
