He enjoyed boating and camping at Canyon Ferry Lake plus taught many young people to drive a boat safely and to water ski. Biking became quite the adventure when he rode his bike across the lower tier of the United States for 5 ½ weeks from Oceanside, CA to St. Simons Island, GA. He enjoyed spending time weekly with his friends, visiting grandkids and traveling with his wife.
He met his wife at the Y.M.C.A. in 1967 and married in 1969 at the First Christian Church. They celebrated their 46th year of marriage on December 27th, 2015.

This comes as a shock. I first got to know Doug when he was a bundle of endless energy at Community Service (I worked at the Consensus Council). As neighbors for 23 years a few blocks down on Hauser Blvd, I always looked forward to conversations and laughs with Doug–just bumped into him at Van’s a couple of weeks ago. He was an inspiration to keep pedaling, keep walking, keep drumming up good ways to make Helena an even better place to live and play. He is sorely missed. Our condolences to Susan, Stacey, and family.

Doug was a great man and mentor. As our AAU swim coach in the Y-Lions program in the 60’s he was hard driving, but wielded encouragement rather than the stick. Widely respected in Helena and MT. One of very few that had a real interest in Kids and followed them well into adulthood. He is a unforgettable character.

Susan. We are so sorry for your loss and sorry too that we can not attend the memorial service as we are out of state. Our fond memories of Doug are many and each one reminds us of his always positive, can-do attitude. May the grief you are feeling soon be softened and then replaced by the happy memories of the time we had with Doug pedaling alongside us all.
Brad says
Doug- Thanks for all the Power Bars and fun poker rides, DDRs, and centuries. You always had the right words to get me up the hill…and I still remember some of your stories about those hills! I hope you’re riding on smoother pavement than we always did on Hwy 12!
Sherri McGuire says
Susan and Family,
So sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. I would not be what, where or who I am today without Doug taking a chance and hiring me for my first “real” job at the Credit Bureau. He taught me how to be a valuable worker, an effective supervisor, how to deal with upset people with kindness and above all how to keep an upbeat attitude! He always had a positive word and friendly smile whenever I would see him. He was a gem and he will be missed!
Greg Pottruff says
I was sorry to hear Doug is gone. Bicycling would have not have been such big part of my life if it was not for Doug and Susan. Doug got me involved with fund raising for the American Lung Association years ago. Even though it is winter I think I will take a spin around the block in his memory…still have the bike I had then.
Diann Coons says

Dear Susan and Stacey, we were so saddened to read about Doug’s passing. He was such a wonderful friend and supporter during our time in Helen and working with him and Jeff and Sue Miller to establish the original Life Cycle ride. We traveled many trails together some dark but mostly sunny primarily because of Doug’s wonderful sense of humor and optimism. He was a wonderful man and Susan you were always the pillar of strength in Doug’s life and we’ll never forget that as well. God Bless you during this trying time.
Love,
Bill & Judy Coddington
