Eileen C. Effing passed away Sunday, October 2, 2011 at her home. She was born Veronica Eileen January 10, 1923 to William M. and Esther (O’Farrell) Cashin in Hartford, Conn.
She attended grade school and high school in West Hartford and went on to attend St. Joseph College there, graduating in 1945. Eileen moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the Paraguayan and Uraguayan embassies. She took trips to Cuba and Mexico with her friends.
Eileen met Gerald Effing in Washington, D.C. and they were married there September 3, 1949. Hearing from their friend Leona how wonderful Montana was, they moved west to Missoula. Their four children were born in Missoula. Eileen was a homemaker during those years. In 1969, the family moved to Helena. Eileen worked in the Vocational Education Office for a few years. She also worked as a Spanish and French translator for the U.S. Joint Publications Service.
Eileen was involved in the Altar Society in both Missoula and Helena. She was a PTA member during her kids’ school years. She also loved to play bridge. Eileen was a voracious reader, particularly the last few years when she didn’t get out much.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; son, John; and sister, Bea Steeves.
She is survived by her three daughters, Barbara Effing of Helena, Kathy (Bruce) Nettleton of East Helena, and Teresa Effing of Hamilton. She is also survived by seven grandsons, Scott Effing (Suzy Holley) of Phoenix, Ryan, Tyler and Jeremy Nettleton, Jean Freeman, Tim Wiseman and Dylan Zech; and one great-grandson, Landon Holley.
A rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 5th at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be noon Thursday, October 6th at the Cathedral of St. Helena. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Please join the family for a reception in the Brondel Center in the lower level of the Cathedral immediately following the graveside service. They were both such class acts and you will miss her very much. Dad still at our home on Glen. He will be 91 this month and is frail with some memory problems. to Kathy & all the Effing family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of your Mom & your family when we all lived in Missoula in the Target Range area. I remember staying at your home in Helena with Kathy when my parents would come over for Shrine fuctions & I was fortunate to stay with you. She was such a great cook!
