Elizabeth (Liz) Ungherini Downs
Elizabeth (Liz) Ungherini Downs, age 91, of Butte, Montana, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of January 19, 2026, in California, surrounded by her family. She was born Elizabeth Margaret Ungherini on October 5, 1934, to Dr. V.O. and Elizabeth (Bessie, Lynch) Ungherini.
Liz graduated from Butte Central High School and attended Carroll College in Helena, Montana, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing. While serving as a Saint cheerleader, she met her future husband, Harry. They were married in Butte on June 28, 1958. After spending three years in Arlington, Virginia, they moved to Fremont, California, where they lived for 41 years. During her time there, she was a dedicated member of the Holy Spirit School and church community and remained active in later years at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish. Liz’s professional life was defined by service; she worked as a nurse at several hospitals and medical offices and generously volunteered her time as a hospice nurse.
In 2005, Harry and Liz retired and returned to their home state of Montana. Liz continued her commitment to service by mentoring students in the Carroll College’s Department of Nursing and volunteering at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena. There she held court taking weekly blood pressure readings in the main lobby until the age of 89. She was a devoted parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and cherishing her time with her beloved “church ladies”.
Following Harry’s passing in January 2024, Liz returned to California. There, she enjoyed the company of a wonderful group of friends at the Pinole Senior Center, casino “dining” with Tim, park strolls with Denise, trips to Sacramento with Patrick, and amazing love and care from Danette. She also became an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rodeo.
Elizabeth is survived by her five children: Deanna, Denise, Danette, Patrick, and Tim; her son-in-law, Larry; her daughter-in-law, Shannon; and her grandchildren: Maggie, Kate, Piper, and Parker.
She is also survived by her sister, Elaine Howard of Colorado, and her nieces and nephews: Randy, Rick, Laura, and Lisa, along with their children. Finally, Liz was blessed with four wonderful sisters-in-law—Carol, Jeannie, Barbara, and Diane—who were not just family, but some of her dearest friends.
Liz will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her deep Catholic faith, her dedication to her community, her fondness for her pet basset hounds and the opera, her sharp sense of humor (often described as worthy of a Las Vegas act,) and the lifelong friendships she cultivated.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Helena, Montana, on June 26, 2026, at 11:00 am with refreshments to follow. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the kind words and condolences received during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate to the John Downs Scholarship Fund c/o Harry and Elizabeth Downs, Carroll College, 1606 N. Benton Avenue, Helena, Montana 59625.
