Eugene Earl Lovely, age 90 of Helena, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at St. Peter’s Hospital. He was born to the late Mitchell A. and Dorthea E. (Prim) Lovely on January 29, 1923 in Helena, Montana.
Eugene was raised in Helena during the depression and graduated from High School in June 1941. He started his life long career as a carpenter in 1939 as an apprentice. Eugene served his country and entered into the United States Army on February 8, 1943 at Fort Douglas, Utah. He received his basic training along with advanced training with the 14th Airborne in Camp Stewart, Georgia. He also continued his training at Ft. Gordon, Georgia and Camp Pickett, Virginia. Eugene later served overseas under George S. Patton in the 3rd Army; Company A, 317th Infantry, Regiment 80th Division.
He was wounded on September 25, 1944 by sniper fire after leaving Nancy, France, heading to Metz. Eugene and his outfit came under fire from a Germany machine gun nest on a hill top. After spending the night wounded in the snow after dark, and spending the next night in a basement in Toul, France, he was taken to the 107th General Hospital in Paris and then on to the 55th General Hospital in England. Eugene was finally returned to the states and began his treatment for a bone graft and arthrodesis operation at the Barnes General Hospital in Vancouver, Washington in April of 1945.
Eugene received medals of merit which included a Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was later honorably discharged on December 16, 1945 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
After his discharge from the military, Eugene resumed his career as a carpenter. He met and married the love of his life, Pearl Josephine Worden on April 1, 1949 at the Presbyterian Church in Helena.
Eugene enjoyed many activities. He was a life member of the Military order of the Purple Heart, the Disabled American Veterans, and a life member of the Carpenters #153 in Helena.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl in 2003, his father, Mitchell and his mother, Dorthea and sisters, Evelyn and Dorothy. Eugene is survived by his daughter, Joyce (Bob) Liedle of Roy, Washington; grandson, Stacy (Lynn) Liedle of Kenmoore, WA; great granddaughter, Madison and great grandson, Jacob; brother, Mitchell Lovely, Jr. of Helena, MT; niece, Michelle Broderson of Helena, MT; nephews, Tim Lovely of Missoula, MT and Jeff Lovely of Helena, MT; cousins, Robert Prim of Havre, MT; Royal Clinton of Union, WA and James Lovely of Deer Lodge, MT.
A visitation will be held from 10 – 4 p.m., Thursday, April 18, 2013 with a funeral service scheduled at 10 a.m., Friday, April 19 at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home. A social gathering will immediately follow the service in the banquet hall of the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Helena Sunset Memorial Gardens.

I haven’t seen Eugene for quite sometime–used to see him walking around Spring Meadow Lake or in Van’s Triftway. Eugene always stopped to pet my Goldens or just to chat while walking. Pearl was my secretary so I remember both Pearl and Eugene fondly. God bless..

I really miss our Sunday morning breakfasts of Biskets & Gravey even when sometimes they were so tuff a cleaver could help break them up. Helena has lost one of the Best Carpenters & Door Hangers around. Your memories of Peoples Names,& places from the time we were kids was wonderful . Such as The Riding Academy ,run by Poker Brown where
I my use to exercise my uncles horse. The Rodney Street Gang & the rubber gun wars. I pray that you re planted , wearing the new Boots you told you had . I’m sure that Pearl welcomed you with open armes & thanked you for the loving care you gave her.
