Irene A. Fred, 1614 Grant Street, Helena, died Friday Morning, September 28, 2012 of natural causes at the age of 98 years.
She was born November 24, 1913 to Herbert and Pearl Lehfeldt in Musselshell, Montana. Her family moved shortly thereafter to Deer Lake, Minnesota, where she attended grade school. She moved to Helena with her family in 1925 where she attended school, graduating from Helena High School in 1932 and worked for many prominent families throughout her school years. She worked for Montana Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Helena for twenty-seven years, from 1949 to 1976, at which time she retired.
She and Enoch A. Fred of Marysville were married in Helena, November 23, 1932. Enoch and Irene enjoyed all aspects of the outdoors and nature, their many trips to Arizona and Alaska while rock-hunting and enjoying the scenery, and following their son Earl around the state during his athletic involvements. They were present at all Legion baseball games and the Helena Bengal basketball games throughout the years.
Irene kept busy in her final years, working in and taking great pride in the appearance of her flower gardens and her lawn, regularly attending the Kiwanis travelogues, and will always be remembered for the excellent meals she prepared for all the special occasions. She was a member of Josephine Hepner Chapter #89, O.E.S.
She was preceded in death by her husband Enoch in June 1987, her parents, her brothers, Duke Lehfeldt and Rudy Lehfeldt, her sister Evelyn (Lehfeldt) McCorkle.
Survivors include her son, Earl (Val Flansaas) of Marysville, MT; two brothers, Gilbert Lehfeldt and his wife Dee Dee of Lewistown, MT; Herbert of Linden, WA; sister, Sylvia (Lehfeldt) Fred of Newport, OR; two grandchildren, Karen Fred (Troy Gary) of Helena and David Fred and his wife, Ceseli, of Costa Mesa, CA; sister-in-law, Marla of Colorado, numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved cat Kelsey.

I am very sorry for your loss. I work on the Meals on Wheels truck and Irene was one of my favorite clients. She always had a smile and a kind word. She was truly a lady. Again, my deepest sympathies. Duzzie Stolp, the gal with baseball cap on delivering meals

Laurie McGrath says
A beautiful, loving, kind lady. I was privileged to be able to know her the last 5 years thanks to Earl, Val and Karen. I admired her independence and she did it “her way” right to the end. You were blessed to have her in your life.
Don Cumming says
Earl, I remember your Mom was the first one at your side when you got bloodied during a state tournament basketball game in Great Falls. Nice lady.
My condolences.
