Frederick “Fred” J. Schroeder passed away July 10th after a brief battle with leukemia. He was 70 years old. Fred was born June 20th 1951 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He moved to Montana in 1971 and met his future wife, Pauline, in 1972. Fred adopted Pauline’s daughter in 1978 and was a joyful and dedicated husband and father. He was patient with his family and took great care of them.
Fred is survived by his wife, Pauline Schroeder; grandsons James (Shannon) Thomas and Carson Thomas; great-grandson Jackson Thomas; sisters Cindy (Phillip) Schaffner and Karen O’Brien; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Arlene Schroeder; daughter Shannon Thomas; sister Margaret “Pat” Williams; and brother-in-law Larry O’Brien.
Grandpa Fred will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of meeting him. Fred’s grandsons and great-grandson will remember him as someone who was always there for them; he was always at games, milestones, and important events. He was kind to everyone and enjoyed talking to and meeting people. Grandpa Fred truly enjoyed life; he always wanted to have fun and loved spending time with his family. Some of his passions were his house on Swan Lake, his cats and dog Sadie, trap shooting, pheasant hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and the Green Bay Packers.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Peter’s Hospital and University of Colorado Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, July 26th at 11:30 at the Spring Meadow Pavilion. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Lewis and Clark Humane Society.

So sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. I first met Fred in 1969 when we both attended the Gow School in South Wales, N.Y. Then we crossed paths unexpectedly in 1972 at the University of Montana. We then became roommates at the U of Mt in Miller Hall. Fred was an avid fisherman for all his life and while still living in Wisconsin, guided actor William Schattner as his fishing guide on two occasions. This would have been in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. The last time I saw Fred was in 1974. But we spoke on the phone about twenty years ago and caught up. So glad I had the opportunity to know Fred!
