Gary Cloninger, age 85, of Helena, MT passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at the Serenity Point Living Home in Townsend, Montana with his wife ad step daughter, Helen, by his side.
He was born in Bozeman, Montana on March 15, 1939 to James and Macalena Cloninger. He attended school at the old Central School, Helena Junior High and his freshman year at Helena High School when he transferred to Cascade High School where he graduated.
He married Carol Arndt and made their home in Wolf Creek of which Carlene, Kevin and Keith were born. They later divorced.
As he grew up, he worked at a different ranch in the valley. He worked with the F&S Construction during the building of the Wolf Creek Canyon Highway then put in 24 years with the Montana Highway Department as an operator.
He married Peggy DeLaHunt on March 12, 1990 of which they just celebrated 34 years of marriage.
He retired in 1994 and they moved to Helena. He decided to keep busy so he went to work with Valley Dodge as a parts delivery person for about four years. Then he worked for Walmart as a stocker.
While in Wolf Creek, Gary was the president of the WCVFD for more than 38 years; he fought many forest fires in Montana, the last one being in the Plaines, MT Area.
Gary enjoyed many outdoor activities such as four wheeling, snowmobiling, skiing, camping, riding horses and his favorite, dancing and bowling. If he made a strike, the whole place knew it as he would yell “Ya Baby!” which was one of his team’s name.
