Gary Luke Martinez 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 1, 2015.
Gary was born October 3, 1945 in Evanston, Wyoming to Luke and Juanita “Birch” Martinez.
Gary was raised in various railroad towns throughout Wyoming – where ever his dad’s work was.
Gary loved the freedom of the outdoors and was an avid fly fisherman. As a child, Gary was taught the art of fly fishing by his father. During high school Gary was a star athlete; mainly track and football.
Gary was a veteran of the Vietnam War. In 1965, Gary was drafted into the Navy and served on the USS Ogden LPD-5. He served until 1967. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Metal (2 Stars) and the Vietnam Campaign Metal (with Device).
Gary worked various jobs throughout his life such as working on ranches, mines, trapping, outfitting and painting the high iron in New York City and Brooklyn. Gary worked as a professional painter until he began his career at Montana State Fund where he eventually retired.
On July 20, 2002 Gary married the love of his life, Lila which blended two families. The entire family loved camping and fishing and spending time together. Gary was previously married to Sally Cohen and they lovingly raised three children; Renee, Jennifer and Sean.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Luke and Juanita, his brother Tim and his beloved dog Minnie.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Lila, daughters Renee (Todd) Pocha, Jennifer Martinez, Amie (Jason) Honeycutt and sons, Sean Martinez and Casey McAlpin and his cherished dog, Buster.
His grandchildren are Cassie Pocha, Breanna Pocha, Shawn Pocha, Kaden Martinez, Emry Martinez, Taylor Martinez, Madelynn Honeycutt, Grace Honeycutt, Ellie Honeycutt, Lauren Honeycutt and 2 week old Luke (Gary’s namesake) Honeycutt.
Gary considered his religion to be the great outdoors and the creatures that lived within his treasured mountains.
Gary had a difficult time leaving this world because he was worried that the love of his life, Lila and his grandchildren would miss him too much. Gary used to say “Love you to the moon and back”.
Gary is fishing the big river in heaven and smiling down on his family with his wry smile.

To The Martinez Family I have grown to love over the last 2 yrs. Gary was a wonderful man who accepted me with open arms. He had some wonderful stories and I am thankful that I was able to enjoy a weekend of camping with him this summer when he helped Taylor catch 2 fish just the 2 of them. I told Sean that I smile when I think about him because the last conversation we had was about the petrified poop he had t home and all the things he had done and found in his many years of life. You will be cherished forever Gary and your stories will never be forgotten and will always bring a smile to my face. Love you Gary!
