Gayle laced her running shoes for her final morning run,
“This is the day the Lord hath made” as she greeted the morning sun.
Celebrating a life well lived in her effort to strive, thrive and live.
With gratitude of family, friends and coworkers, to the end, a smile she did give.
On March 15, 2019, Gayle Larson Moon passed away surrounded by her family.
Gayle was born on April 27, 1954 to James G. and Opal Larson in Shelby, MT. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood playing outdoors, bicycling, Girl Scouts, volunteering, singing, playing the piano, and running track. In 1971, Gayle was crowned Toole County Junior Miss and was first runner-up in the state pageant. During summers, she worked in the family business, Larson Clothing Company.
Upon graduation from Shelby High School in 1972, she attended Pacific Lutheran University. She transferred to the University of Montana where she earned a degree in Business Administration-Accounting emphasis. In November 1977, she was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant.
Gayle served the State of Montana for 37 years. She began her career in 1978 as a Legislative Auditor, served as the first financial manager for the Montana Lottery, and spent 26 years with the Board of Investments (BOI). She retired from BOI in 2015 as Chief Financial Manager. Governor Steve Bullock honored Gayle’s tenure with a letter of commendation.
In 1981, she met Bob Moon at Crossroads Health Club. They were engaged in 1983. Gayle was honored to join Bob and his daughters, Dawn and Molly, in marriage on a rainy/snowy day, August 20, 1983. Bob and Gayle were blessed with their daughters Allison in 1986 and Ashley in 1990.
Bob and Gayle enjoyed many adventures: honeymooning on the West Coast in a brand new Honda Prelude, traveling to Singapore, Indonesia, London, Alaska, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Mexico, and the Panama Canal. Gayle enjoyed annual trips to the family condo and cabin in Whitefish, Glacier National Park, and Green Valley, AZ.
Community service and staying active were themes throughout Gayle’s life. She volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher, and as a Camp Fire leader. She was an avid runner. At age 60, shortly after receiving her cancer diagnosis, she won first in her age group in the Governor’s Cup 5K! She enjoyed waterskiing, cross country and downhill skiing, golfing, reading, walking, and capturing family memories in books.
Gayle was an inspiration with her incredible strength, perseverance, and faith. She was positive, healthy, driven, and thoughtful. She will be remembered for the love she had for her family, caring nature, generosity, intelligence, willingness to learn, the joy of completing financial reconciliations, and encouragement of others to pursue their dreams. Relationships were of utmost importance.
Gayle courageously and gracefully navigated her cancer diagnosis. Her walks to and from the Cancer Treatment Center were admirable. The family extends its gratitude to the staff, nurses, Emily Burton, Dr. Weiner, and Dr. Capino, who she described as dear friends over the years.
Gayle is survived by her husband, Bob Moon; mother, Opal Larson; sisters, Sandra (Paul) Steiner and Wendy (Bob) Elisha; daughters, Ashley Moon, Allison Moon, Molly (Won) Yi, Dawn (Andy) Thompson; nieces and nephews, Kevin Steiner, Marie (Ryan) Nelson, Brian (Taylor) Chuckran, Anna (Gavin) Latham; grandchildren, Austin and Alexis Yi, Simone and Marcus Thompson; great-nephew and nieces. She was preceded in death by her father, James G. Larson; in-laws, Austin and Marcella Moon; uncle, Allan Larson; and the family cat, Buttons.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 24th at the Downstairs at the Brewhouse, 939 ½ Getchell Street, in Helena. A memorial service celebrating Gayle’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 25th at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 512 Logan Street in Helena. Gayle and I were Shelby High grads, she the class of ’72, me the class of ’71. Her beautiful persona, soft spoken voice and tender giggle were a part of her ladylike charisma. I had the privilege of crowning her Toole County’s Jr. Miss as Gayle was my “successor”. As the years have passed, I lost touch. I had no idea the talented Gayle was fighting a mighty cancer battle. The Earth has one Angel less, Heaven one more. Sincere sympathies to all who loved and admired this wonderful young lady.

I am praying for you guys during this unimaginable time of loss.
