George Allen Algard passed away August 3, 2012 at Apple Rehab/Cooney Home in Helena Mt. from complications of Parkinson’s disease and M.D.S.
George was born July 22, 1941 to Arthur and Alice Ronning Algard in Big Timber, Mt. where he lived and graduated from Sweetgrass County High School Class of 1959. After high school he attended Concordia College in Moorehead, MN graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then went on to receive his Masters Degree in Zoology/Biology in 1967 from Montana State University.
On July 1, 1967 George married Susan Cranmer of Helena, MT, their son Kurt born in 1968 and daughter Janna born in 1973.
George worked as a seasonal naturalist in Yellowstone National Park and Death Valley, CA through 1974. Winters were spent teaching Biology at Miami Jr. College in Miami, OK and Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL. In 1974 George and Susan moved to Helena where he went to work for the Montana Department of Agriculture until he retired in 2001.
George was active in the community and was Past Exalted Ruler of Helena BPOE 1903; Past State Chairman of Mt. Ducks Unlimited and Past Governor of Helena Loyal Order of Moose 693. He also enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing, golf and camping. The last 5 years winters had been spent with his wife in Nevada and Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Harold and Janet Cranmer and his son-in-law Richard Flick. He is survived by his wife Susan; children Kurt Algard of Belgrade, Mt and Janna Flick of Houston, Tx; sister Shirley (George) Wyse of Billings; brother-in-law Art Cranmer (Debbie) of St. Louis, MO and seven nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held Friday August 24th, 2012 at 2:00p.m. at Retz Funeral Home with internment following at Forestvale Cemetery Lunch will follow at the Helena Moose Lodge at 4750 N. Mt. Ave.
