George Joseph Martin
George Joseph Martin, 75, of Helena, Montana, passed away at his home July 22, 2021. George was born July 5, 1946 in Everett, Washington, the son of the late Selene Elizabeth Olson Martin and George William Martin.
At an early age, George moved from Everett, Washington to Stanford, Montana. Under the guidance and support of his grandparents, Elizabeth and Arthur Olson, George attended Stanford Junior and Senior High School. After graduating in 1966, George moved to Helena for custodial work, starting at the local hospital, the Cathedral of St. Helena and School District #1. He was incredibly hard-working, who often held 2-3 jobs at once, thus able to purchase his Helena home in 1980. For a time, he owned his own cleaning business where his mother Selene would join him in cleaning offices and buildings after hours.
George was a nurturer by nature, taking care of both his mother and his uncle David Olson for a number of years. He had a deep passion for animals, owning dogs, cats and feeding a number of birds. George walked daily to surrounding areas, but had a loyal friend, Mike O’Neill, who offered rides which brought joy and entertainment to the chores. The two of them traveled far to check-out cars, traveled around Montana to see sights, did weekly errands around Helena and called each other almost daily. His neighbor, Joe Morgan said George was the best neighbor he had ever had: kind, intelligent, a good listener, and had a warm smile. All those who knew George would agree!
George was an only child, survived by his uncle Ray Olson, of Billings, Montana and numerous cousins and relatives. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Burial for George will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Stanford Cemetery. A light lunch will be served at 12:noon at Dauna’s Deli located in the Judith Basin Trading Post on Main St in Stanford, MT
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in George’s name to Lewis & Clark County Humane Society 2112 E Custer Ave Helena, MT 59602 406-442-1660 https://lchsmontana.org/

I didn’t know a kinder man than George, he was always willing to help anyone and has helped me on many occasions. He will be greatly missed in this society, we need more men like him.

George was my cousin. I remember our visits to Stanford, to see our grandparents and where we often visited with George, a bit quiet but always kind-spirited. I remember eagerly running up the stairs to see him. George sat calmly in his room, smiling, as we asked a number of inquisitive questions about this-or-that. His patience with us was astounding. What a gentle soul!
