Gordon Eslick passed away at his home in the waning hours of January 14, 2024 after a courageous battle with kidney disease. He spent his last days at home surrounded by his loving family.
Gordon was born on July 12,1955 to parents Evangeline and Jack Eslick where he joined his older brother John (who he called Joe). The family spent time in Spokane and Billings but settled in Helena, where he graduated from Helena High School in 1973. He went on to receive his welding certificate from the Helena Vo-Tech.
On June 29,1985, Gordon married the love of his life Sharon Applegate and they started their life together with Gordon’s children, Aaron and Mandy. A few years later, they welcomed Katie and Jordan and their family was complete. Gordon always swore that his gray hair came from Sharon and the girls, but we’re sure that Aaron contributed to the graying process as well.
Gordon worked for the Asarco Smelter in East Helena and at several auto parts stores throughout Helena. He worked at Eagle Tire, Engines Etc. Machine Shop and was a dispatcher for Helena Sand and Gravel and later Valley Sand and Gravel. His final job was working in the parts department at the Helena College-Airport Campus. He found his best friend (his faithful dog, Maddie) after he retired from working and together they spent their days watching tv and eating McDonald’s burgers and fries. We all thought he loved her the most, with the rest of us following somewhere behind.
He also loved his cars. He would help friends with repairs and always wanted to own more than he had (and he owned his share of cars in his lifetime). Sharon was always telling him, “We don’t need another car”. Even in his last days, he spent time watching the car auctions on TV and telling us which of his friends owned which cars, back in the day. His other hobbies included bowling. As part of our bigger bowling family, Gordon enjoyed participating in the sport as well as watching Sharon, the kids and even grandkids, take up the sport.
He loved being a father but found an even greater joy when he became a Papa. Due to many health problems throughout the years, he was not the normal grandfather. His family often referred to him as the “sit down grandpa” but he found ways to form bonds and make memories with the kids. He always enjoyed rocking in his chair with a sleeping grandbaby or teasing and pinching them as they walked by. He enjoyed many of the grandkid’s outdoor sporting events from the warmth and comfort of the car (even if it was July) as he was always cold.
Gordon is preceded in death by his parents Jack Eslick and Evangeline (Irma) Eslick Speer, stepfather Elmer Speer, son Aaron Eslick, and father- and mother- in-law Jean and Clarence Applegate.
He leaves behind his dog Maddie, his wife Sharon, daughters Amanda Eslick (Jason Smith), Katie Eslick, and Jordan (Ry) Paull, grandchildren Hannah, Tanyan (aka Nonie), Ari, Payton, Emerson, and Kamden, brother John (Cristy) Eslick of Maryland, brother-in-law Rod Applegate and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Vince Saccheri and KC Hill, who he considered to be family.
The Eslick family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. LaClair, Lisa, Amber and the entire St. Peter’s Dialysis team, Dr. Kirksey, Jacki and the North Clinic staff, and St. Peter’s Hospice, who all provided exceptional, loving care for Gordon. We are forever grateful.
“We little knew the day, that God would call your name.
In life we loved your dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone.
For parts of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide.
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.”
