Gregory Hamlin Ames passed from this life after a short battle with cancer on June 11, 2017. He was born in Scobey, Montana on January 21, 1956 to Richard Gilbert Ames and Kay Frances Sullivan Ames.
After growing up with his siblings in Glasgow, Greg graduated from Glasgow High School, and then attended college and graduated from the Montana State University School of Engineering in 1978.
Upon graduation, Greg was employed as an engineer with Jack Foster of Townsend at Northwest Irrigation, Inc. While working there, he fell in love with the boss’s daughter. Susan and Greg were married on May 15, 1981 and spent the remaining years of his life enjoying the adventure they built together in Helena, Montana.
Greg’s career later ended up taking him to the State of Montana where he worked for the Department of Natural Resources & Conservation for 15 years. He transferred to the Department of Agriculture where he has served for the past 16 years as the Administrator for the Ag Sciences Division until the time of his passing.
Family meant the world to Greg and Susan, and they were the proud parents of four gregarious students and athletes. Lance was born in 1985, David in 1987, Ashley in 1990, and Nicole in 2000. Greg enjoyed coaching their various teams through the years including small fry football, basketball, baseball and softball. Last summer, he was proud to help coach Nicole’s ASA fast pitch softball U-16 team to a statewide championship.
The family lived on a farm in the Helena valley where Greg built their home. He took great pride in producing some of the highest quality horse hay in the valley. Farming was never a burden, but only a great joy to him. He also loved hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and river rafting. His favorite float was the Smith River trip which he was fortunate enough to take several times through the years. In addition, Greg loved flying. He took lessons in high school and received his license in college. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Hub Ames, a pioneer pilot in Montana who flew every available plane during WWII.
Another joy of Greg’s was his involvement with the LDS Church. For the past five years, he was honored to have been called as the Bishop of the Helena 4th Ward. He loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and lived his life as an example of that great love. As sad as he was to know he would soon be leaving us, he had no fear and greatly anticipated meeting his Savior, Jesus Christ, and having the opportunity to be in His presence and service.
Greg had an endless reservoir of compassion for people and loved everyone with whom he came into contact. Anyone who knew him was very familiar with that wide smile that so often lit his face. He loved life, he loved the Lord, he loved his family, he loved the world in which he lived, and he loved to work hard and accomplish much. Greg was universally loved by his family and countless others.
Greg is survived by the love of his life, Susan of Helena, plus children Lance and Jen of McAllen, TX, David, Ashley and Tony Dalton, and Nicole, all of Helena. He is survived by cherished grandchildren Alivia, Blake, Carissa, and Seth Ames, as well as Dallin Gregory Dalton, who was born the same day Greg passed from this earth.
In addition, Greg is survived by his father Richard of Billings, mother Kay of Salt Lake City, and four siblings, Julie Robinson, Jeannie Morrison, Mike Ames and Sheila Knoepke.

Susan and Family,
We are deeply saddened by this news. I have many memories of Greg at softball and volleyball games throughout my youth–always there to give me a “good game” or some sort of heckle at the conclusion of the game. He was truly a good man of integrity and a strong leader in the Ames family. We always respected what he stood for and how he carried himself. I am thankful to have known him. We will keep your family close to our hearts and constantly in our prayers. We are very sorry for your loss.

May our Heavenly Father and Jesus wrap all of you in love during this time of sorrow and grief. But how we rejoice to know we will all be reunited with our loved ones again.

As I look back on my time with Greg, I remember hunting in the Elkhorns and on the Stanfill ranch in Townsend. I remember the great shot that he was. jOHN AND SHERRY ZIPPERIAN says
Sue and family – So sorry – as I read the other condolences I remembered how much fun it was to watch the GREG/SUE romance develop. ‘Beauty, Handsome, and Personalities Plus were joined as One”. I did not realize Greg was the same age as our oldest son, Kenny, who passed away three years ago. Feels like loved ones age 58 and 61 are way too young to lose (temporarily) but the Lord knows what He is doing and we who are left here have our jobs to do, too. Memories have sustained us, just as they will you.. With Love – John and Sherry Zipperian

Andy Pehl says
Greg was my best friend for several years at MSU and he really was a dependable hardworking man. He worked in the summers on the railroad and in the fall he was in good shape to play basketball and just have fun. Big smile and no bragging- just carried a big book bag and loved engineering (ag to be exact). We shared a high school coach Cactus Warner- and put together a team one Christmas break to play at the Scobey tournery. Stayed at Greg’s grandparents house. Memories just flow out of Greg to me right now– I am sure he was being a great grandpa to all those of his family. Absent from the body and present with the Lord. Susan you are in my prayers. He made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. He was genuine and Christlike. The world will miss him but none will miss him more than you. If he had had the choice he would have remained on this earth with you but as it was he showed the world not only to live but also to die with faith and grace. Hugs.
