In Loving Memory of Sgt. Harvey Urness, USMC.
Born: July 21, 1928
Died: Feb. 3, 2011
Harvey left us peacefully in the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 2011. He was born to Henry and Nora Urness in the small farm town of Kenyon, Minnesota July 21, 1928.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Curt and Robert Urness. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joyce E. Urness, daughter Holly (Brian) Wey and son Rick (Charlene); grandchildren Cassidy Green, Nora Wey and Cierra Urness; and a great-grandson, Dustin Chandler. He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Maychrzak, a brother, Charles Urness, three step-sons, a step-daughter, three step-grandsons and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with many friends.
Harvey started life with an eighth grade education and joined the Marine Corps at 17. He was a very proud Marine. He spent time in the end of World War II and during the Korean War, and brought back many stories and memories, both good and bad.
Harvey was also proud of his music. He loved to play guitar and sing. A neighbor boy on the farm taught him a few chords, and Harvey took it from there. He had a band called Harvey Urness and Mississippi Gamblers, an album of his own songs, played on the radio and even had a television show in Minnesota. While he could perform, one rarely saw him without his guitar. He made many smile with it. He also loved history, especially the Old West, and like riding horses. He loved cowboy stuff!
Although Harvey had several health problems along the way, he always came back with a smile. He was a very wise man. He read and learned every chance he had, and was proud of anyone in his family who did the same. He was generous, empathetic and proud. Harvey loved his family with all his heart and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Semper fi, Daddy!
Memorial services will be on Wednesday, February 9 at 11:00 a.m. Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home in Helena. Burial will follow the services at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison. A reception will be given for Harvey’s family and friends at the Corner Café, 24 W. Main Street, East Helena.
