Herbert Walberg Jr.
April 10, 1941 to March 7, 2025
Herbert Walberg Jr. was born to Herbert and Clara Walberg in Biwabik, Minnesota on April 10, 1941. The first born, he grew up with his siblings Curt, Claudia, Rodger, and Wendie near the North Shore of Lake Superior. During his school years, he had eyes upon LaDean Sheldon and on December 17, 1960, they were married. For sixty-four plus years they built their relationship with Godly principles, loving each other, their son Scott, daughter Shari and their families.
Herb’s career included several managerial positions in northern Minnesota and the Minnesota Credit Union League. His employment career concluded as president and CEO of the Montana Credit Union Network for 28 years, retiring in 2001.
Herb’s second career began at Glacier Bible Camp in the summer of 2001 and continued for 19 years. Herb and LaDean volunteered their time and talents to the upkeep and operation of the 48-acre property located on the Flathead River in Hungry Horse, Montana. Many winters found them in the warmer climate of Arizona, returning in the spring to Helena, their hometown base of 52 years.
Herb had three families: his biological, the credit union movement, and the family of God. In all three he served with integrity, grace, and love. Notes of encouragement from Herb were sent throughout the United States uplifting countless people. In the last 2 years of his life, Touchmark and the Cancer Treatment Center of St. Peter’s Health became his fourth family, lovingly caring for him on his journey with leukemia, for which his family is eternally grateful.
On March 7, 2025, Herb entered Heaven and heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant” from his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Herb is survived by his wife LaDean; son Scott (Michele) of Turner, OR; and daughter Shari (Wayde) Peterson of Montana City; grandchildren: Mariesa (Matt) Holm, Bree’anna Walberg, Celeste Walberg, Christian (Madi) Peterson, Britton (Melanie) Peterson, Taylor (Faith) Peterson, and Brennan Peterson; great grandchildren: Holly Holm, Ryden Holm, Areli Peterson, and Haven Peterson.
The Walberg family welcomes you to join them for visitation at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home Friday evening from 5 – 7 pm. Celebration of Life will be held at Echo Church (1st Assembly of God) at 10 am on Saturday, March 15.
For those wishing to honor Herb’s memory in a tangible way, contributions can be directed to Glacier Bible Camp, 400 5th Street West, PO Box 190404, Hungry Horse, MT 59919.

Herb was a Church friend for many years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family

John and Sandra Johnson says
Herb was our close and wonderful friend for many years. Herbs leadership of the Credit Unions and my position in the Federal Reserve Bank gave us a commonality. Our two families also shared a deep faith in the Lord. We miss Herb deeply, but we know we will meet again in heaven. Our sympathy to Ladean and the family.
Relinda J Lindgren says
LaDean, Scott, Shari, and families….I’m so very sorry to hear this news. What FABULOUS memories I have of all the holiday dinners at each other’s homes, the fun campouts, and numerous sleep overs. I remember your dad as always quite polished, and ‘put together’ and yet he was also ready to have fun! I know my parents enjoyed many fun road trips with them and I have added a few pictures for your collection. I know he will be greatly missed, but I rejoice with you that he is now reaping the rewards of a life lived for Jesus. Love to you all!
Vince Justice says
Herb spent his life loving and living for Jesus, now he receives his eternal reward. Herb made a huge impact on many people here and will be missed, but we will see him again soon. Cant even imagine the GLORY he is experiencing right now ! Even though we know where he is, am praying for Ladean, Scott and Shari thru this time.
Allan & Carol Merlau says
Herb, a man of great Christian standing and generous heart. We will miss him greatly. He was a faithful servant to so many with love and generosity. We had wonderful fellowship and fun times together. Ladean, Scott and Shari our prayers and love are for you always.
Patricia Garvin says
Herb was a great friend and boss. My life has been enriched from having worked with him for over 20 years at the Montana Credit Union Network. His quest for excellence in all his dealings didn’t just apply to him; he expected 110% from all his staff, and rewarded them accordingly. He put God first, then family, then his profession. He was admired from the national level of credit unions as well as statewide for his integrity, honesty, and professionalism. He and LaDean have been great friends to both Ron and me. We will miss his encouraging text messages. We rejoice with him on his graduation to Heaven. Our forever home is what we look forward to our whole lives, and he has arrived! Glory to God! Our prayers are with the family.
James Homolka says
Herb was a great man, whom I had the pleasure of meeting on several occasions. On a road trip our family took to Glacier National Park one year, Herb helped set us up with some wonderful accommodations and was our friendly contact and tour guide through the Bible camp. Showing us tremendous hospitality as he took us on a tour through the camp and it’s history. He loved that place and he loved people. What a great legacy of Godly living he leaves behind. He will truly be missed.
Bob & Jane Shillingstad says
Jane and I have such great memories of the Walberg family. Scott and Bret were great friends and Shari and Rikke have remained close.
The years at First Assembly were special under Pastor Goodman and being on the board with Herb were instructive, Herb was a Godly influence and a model father and husband. This is a celebration time for Herb, he is home!
Dan Erving says
Its been over 50 years ago that I was fortunate to have met Herb. Shortly after inviting Jesus into my life, Herb took me under his wing and helped me grow spiritually. He quickly became my Christian mentor. His favorite question was, “Do you still love Jesus?” Herb was always encouraging, kind, patient, compassionate, never complaining or finding fault.
He was my spiritual big brother, and I miss his infectious smile. Herb not only affected my life deeply, but those of many others.
My prayers are with you LaDean, Scott, Shari, and your families.
Love, Dan

Herb worked on the Governors Prayer Breakfast committee and was inspirational in making sure that we stayed focused on Christ in choosing the speaker and in praying for our governor and our state representatives. He was a quiet man but yet devoted and determined that Christ be first in all things. LaDean and he at dinner, he was the one we always called on to lead us. Our prayers are with you LaDean and the family. God’s blessings
Carol Bridge says
It was an honor and privilege to be of service to Herb during his time in the Cancer Care Center in Helena. He was always so cheerful and grateful to everyone. I will cherish the time I spent with him. God Bless him and his family.
Sue Wheeler says
Herb taught me a lesson I will never forget when I was a teenager … to be instant in season and out. One Sunday night after he had finished leading worship, he announced “And now, we are going to have a special number by Susie Green.” I, of course, had no idea he was going to do that and didn’t have anything prepared. He kept calling me up front to sing so I went and asked him what I was supposed to sing. He told me to sing How Great Thou Art which I did. After that, I was always prepared to sing a special, which was a good thing, since he randomly would call me up front to sing. Always appreciated Herb and his love for God and others.
Jim Kenyon says
Herb was a great man and he loved his Montana Credit Unions. He will be missed but not forgotten. Our condolences to LaDean and the family.
Mark Lodine says
Herb was one of those rare individuals who always made you feel you were the most important person in the world, except for Christ. His warmth and love for people was contagious. In my mind he was the consummate encourager. A true Barnabas. I was the recipient of numerous thank you notes over the years for recognition of little things I had done on behalf of the credit union movement. I can think of one word which epitomized Herb the most: GRACE. He was probably the most GRACIOUS man I have ever known. It was a privilege and honor to know Herb and to fellowship with him. LaDean, please know that Gerel and I care and are praying for you and your family. We loved Herb!
Kim Susag says
Herb was one of the kindest men I (my family) was blessed to know. My Dad (Gene Rice) admired him and was thankful to have him as a friend. When my Dad passed, Herb was there for all of us. He spoke at Dad’s funeral so eloquently. Whenever my husband and I would see Herb somewhere, he was always genuinely friendly and asked about the family.
Treasure all your memories and take care of each other.

We have great memories of Herb Walberg. Our connection goes way back to our ministry in Montana. Years ago, we had the privilege of working with his son Scott and Michelle. Herb was a dedicated servant of God and shot a straight arrow for the Kingdom of God. He never wavered in his walk with God. What a legacy of excellence he leaves for all of us.
It was a joy to see Herb and LaDean a few years ago at GBC–what dedicated servants.
Our Prayers to all the Wilbergs. I hope we can connect sometime.
