It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James “Steve” Crider on August 2, 2023 in Helena, Montana. Steve was born October 17, 1949 in Pensacola, Florida to James and Helen Crider, a Naval family. The family eventually settled in LaHabra, California where he attended LaHabra High and Fullerton College.
Steve was able to fulfill his life’s dream when he joined the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. During his 28 years he served as a patrolman, detective, sergeant, and mentor to new officers.
In 1981 he met then married Marianna instantly becoming “papa” to her two young daughters. A year later plans for a Windjammer Cruise were cancelled when they welcomed a third daughter, Stephanie.
Steve was a devoted husband to Marianna, his wife of 41 years and an amazing father to Kara (Mo), Nicki (Andy) and Stephanie (Rich), and a proud Grampy to Nate, Mia, Nadia, Emily, GiGi, Evan and baby Rowen.
Upon retiring in 2007 they moved to Helena, Montana to enjoy a quieter life. He liked to say that he quit chasing bad guys and started chasing chickens.
Two words can sum up his life – Well Done, Steve, Well Done. He accomplished his goal of a productive life and raising three caring and accomplished daughters.
A service is planned for Friday, August 11th at 4:00 p.m. at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, in Helena, Montana, followed by a celebration of his life at the family home. Hawaiian shirts are optional.
We love you and will miss you forever, Steve.

Greg Long here. Steve and I attended La Habra High School. After graduation Steve and I were in Marine Corp basic training. We hadn’t seen each other since high school. It was a long 3 months but we both managed to graduate from boot camp. The next time we saw each other was at my wedding in In July 1968. I googled Steve this morning to see he had passed. Very sorry to hear that. RIP Steve
