What a gift Jan was to both my daughters – Gretchen and Jenn. She believed in them, encouraged them and was always interested in what they were doing and where they were going. Her passing has left a hole in all of our hearts… I cannot even imagine what the family must be feeling at this time. Our hearts are with you as you move through this difficult time.

Helena’s beautiful friend, in literature, in community, in friendships. Prayers of strength for Jan’s family as we all struggle with this sudden loss. And the seed of our grief is the joy so many of us had in knowing her, and the gratitude we feel for a life well lived, for gifts well given. Her legacy will live on in Helena for years to come.

The entire Helena community has lost an incredible friend, sister, sister-in-law, mother, daughter and a host of other wonderful characteristics she had. Jan was compassionate, had integrity, and most of all – a glorious outlook on life. One of my favorite things about Jan was her laugh…I can hear it right now. We will miss you Jan. My thoughts are with Jan’s family as they go through this difficult time.

I only knew Jan because of the cancer connection. We texted during her year of chemo. We finally met for lunch just a few months ago. She was happy, moving on and planning trips. I’m glad I have that memory. I thought she’d have more time. It’s what we hope for, just some time. It was not to be. My sincere condolences to Jan’s family. I’m very sorry for your loss.

Words cannot express the heartbreak Helena has felt with Jan leaving this world way too soon. Jan was one of those special souls that touched the lives of so many in a positive way. Her kindness, compassion and beautiful smile will remain in the hearts of so many. My thoughts are with the family. She made this community a better place to live and her passing will leave us all with an empty place, but her kind spirit will remain with all of us forever.

It is hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact that Jan is really gone. 24. Tracy Donaldson says

    July 15, 2015 at 5:23 pm

Jan will be remembered well, as testament to the fact that she lived well. Although I am deeply saddened by her death, I take solace in knowing that she was one of the rare and fortunate people who experienced life fully and passionately. She was blessed with unlimited intelligence and curiosity, the ability and will to follow her heart, and a fundamental kindness and compassion that made her dear to all who were lucky enough to know her. I feel grateful and honored to have been able to count her as a friend. And though I hate losing her so soon, I have little doubt that she left this world at peace, unafraid, with few regrets, and well prepared to experience the great unknown journey ahead. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. You are missed, Jan.

  25. Liz Campbell and Steve Lane says

    July 16, 2015 at 9:25 am

How lucky we were to have Jan and Grace as our next door neighbor. I will miss our conversations, our love of growing things, running over to one another’s house when we were half way through a recipe to discover we were out of butter … the list goes on and on.
Warm thoughts to Grace, her family (including Buddy and Penny) and all of us that were touched by her.

  26. Shari Hunter Brownlee says

    July 16, 2015 at 10:30 am

Sending heartfelt condolences to all of Jan’s family. I’ve known Jan since she and Didi first purchased the book store and became an integral part of the Downtown Helena business community- serving on boards of directors, donating time and merchandise to local charities and events, organizing and participating in so many activities downtown and throughout Helena. Jan was such a professional and had a warm and generous heart, an infectious laugh and beautiful smile. We are all fortunate to have been graced with her presence and we will remember her always. I’m especially thinking of you, Didi, knowing how much you’re grieving Jan’s loss and the special bond you both shared. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel and I believe she’ll watch over you all.

My thoughts and prayers are with Jan and her family. The world has truly lost one of our brightest lights!

  28. David Spencer says

    July 16, 2015 at 3:52 pm

Jan was such a beautiful-souled, great-hearted, & wise being! Books were of course a central passion, but when you add her love of ideas, people, & philosophy, she was pretty much the wh☼le package ☼ Let us all remember that — as Solomon so sagely said — LoVe is Stronger!

  29. Bill Pierce says

    July 16, 2015 at 3:59 pm

What a delightful person. I liked her instantly upon first meeting.

  30. Greg Zeller says

    July 16, 2015 at 6:49 pm

Judy Flanders introduced me to Jan and Didi, not long afterward Little Professor Book Center became Montana Book & Toy Co. It seemed evident early on that that Jan and Didi were unique, intelligent, kind, generous, humble (this could be a long, long list) and genuine. That feeling never faded, but multiplied. It seems like we grew up together in the business community and in service to our community. Jan and I spent many a recording session together at the radio stations and I loved every minute. We become more than “clients” and friends, not sure if we’re kindred spirits or siblings from different parents. To the Peccia and Augustine families, I am sorry for your loss and thankful to have been a tiny part of Jan’s life. Peace be with you!

  31. Catherine Gray-Taylor says

    July 16, 2015 at 9:11 pm

I’m saddened to hear of Jan’s passing–she was a wonderful boss to me throughout my high school and college years working at my beloved bookstore. She was kind, thoughtful, and always showed care and interest in those around her. My thoughts are with her family and friends–Jan, you will be missed.

  32. Mark Hartman says

    July 16, 2015 at 9:13 pm

Like Kara, those of us who have known Jan since 1st grade at Broadwater School (circa 1973) and Capital High are at a loss for words. Though our communication in later years was infrequent and sporadic, I too will always remember her positive spirit, energy, professionalism, and zest for life. My heart aches for Jan’s family. We’ve truly lost an angel, but that angel will continue to live within all of us.

  33. Judy Palmquist says

    July 17, 2015 at 8:18 am

I remember 2 talented young business women I was introduced to at the Little Professor book store. They brought their ideas with them and Little Professor became Mt. Book Co. Shopping there, I would always encounter Jan or Didi, and later on, their two little girls, under the careful watch of their grandma. What a wonderful model for small business! Jan was (and in our memories…is) a talented and caring woman, who seemed to always be moving forward. Many good memories and footprints remain as you enjoy the presence of the Divine now Jan. Blessings and comfort to the whole family as this void in your lives is healing.

  34. Bill and Jan Brown says

    July 17, 2015 at 9:06 pm

Jan became our neighbor when she and Didi bought the bookstore next door to our store, Jorud’s. This began years of through-the-side-door conferences about our families, our businesses and our downtown, and resulted in Jan and Didi later buying our store building. Jan was an astute business owner, a warm and compassionate friend to everyone, and we enjoyed working with her and knowing her for many years. We last saw her after a pottery class at the Bray, glazing graceful pots she had created. She is gone from this earth far too soon. We miss her and send our sympathy to her family.

I was so sad to hear of Jan’s passing, and am praying for her family. I work at Intermountain Children;s Home. For many years Jan & DiDi made sure the children at Intermountain knew they are cared for by them, helped them celebrate birthday’s, and had fun books to read. I knew Jan personally, and always had such respect and fondness for her — as I do for DiDi. There will be a void in Helena without Jan.

  45. Lynn James says

    July 24, 2015 at 5:13 pm

I was in the bookstore today and learned about Jan’s death. She and my sister died on the same day. So I am acutely aware of this fresh wound in her family’s hearts, and I completely understand this sorrow. In a message a friend said , “Stay strong.” Staying strong means shedding countless tears, over and over again. Blessings to all of Jan’s family as you are wrapped in the arms of the loving Helena community.

  46. Pam and John Worster says

    August 6, 2015 at 9:34 pm

Peccia Family: I am so very sorry for your loss of a great family member. Even a few weeks later I still can’t believe Jan is not with you and all of us in body. As close as the family is I’m sure she will be with you always in spirit. Grace always seemed to be a very strong person and very talented as was jan. She now has a very good support team to watch over her and to help her with her future in the direction Jan was raising and guiding her. I know time will always heal a persons mind, soul and body, and we wish all of you the best in your healing.

  47. Lorien Pentecost says

I was/am so shocked to hear of Jan’s passing.
Jan was a beautiful person inside and out. Her flair for multi-tasking and wearing many hats successfully was astounding.
Time heals, but never removes the pain and empty place that only she could fill.
My condolences to the family and Didi.
