Janie Elizabeth Julian passed away peacefully on a sunny Friday morning. She had been saying that she was tired lately, so she gathered her strength and courage to make her final journey on November 8th, 2019. She was 98 years old.
Janie was born in Cayuga, Indiana on April 5th, 1921. Indiana always held a special place in Janie’s heart. She loved her family and friends dearly and spoke fondly of them often.
The highlight of Janie’s youth was meeting a young man, who was to become the love of her life. Janie needed a date for a high school dance and she asked Gerald Julian. She heard he was a good dancer. It must’ve been true! They were married on The Fourth of July, 1943. They were often kidded that they picked that date so they’d always have fireworks!
Times were challenging for employment and housing but Janie would tell stories of how family and friends would help find them a cozy place to live or secure a job. There was also the hardship of having her husband overseas during World War II.
Janie and Getty bought their first home in Hammond, Indiana. This achievement was a source of great pride. Janie could remember and describe in great detail many, many things about that house. She worked a few different jobs throughout her life but she was best at being a homemaker. They wanted to start a family but sadly, Janie lost two babies at birth. In time, they were blessed with two young siblings by means of adoption. It happened rather suddenly, right before Christmas so the holidays were always extra special in the Julian family.
Needing a larger home, Janie and Getty moved to Lansing, Illinois. There, they raised Jean (Pratt of Arizona, deceased) and Ted (Julian of Helena, Montana). Janie loved being a housewife and mother. Their home was always comfortable and tidy. Janie enjoyed cooking and baking. She made cherry and apricot coffee cakes that were stellar! She also enjoyed many crochet projects like afghans, ponchos, and hats. Janie loved her yarn hats! In later years, she was seldom seen without one. She was wearing the one she made on the morning she passed. She dabbled in needlepoint and made some joyful Christmas ornaments. Janie was an avid reader. She read the bible for strength, poetry for its beauty and romance and proudly read every Agatha Christie mystery!
As the children grew and left home, she enjoyed her later years going to craft fairs and art shows as Getty became quite the painter. She enjoyed meeting and talking to people and they did a bit of traveling. They visited the East coast to see lighthouses and rugged shorelines and also came out West.
Janie developed macular degeneration and losing her sight was difficult. Her husband happily took care of most of their responsibilities. She sorely missed reading and crafting, but later enjoyed the Talking Books Program. When Getty became suddenly ill and passed away in 2007, Janie went to live with her son and daughter-in-law in Montana. She had a cozy room and enjoyed good health and was able to amble about the house until she became too unsteady. She greatly enjoyed visits from her grown grandchildren, who often helped with her care. Her great grandchildren brought the biggest smiles to her face. Janie also has grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren residing out of state.
A family memorial will take place at a later date and Janie will be taken back to Illinois to be laid to rest with her husband at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Please visit below to offer the family a condolence or share a memory of Janie.

I miss going over to my grandparents house and walking into her room to see a smile on her face, I’m still quite young and wish I had gotten to know my great grandma Janie a lot better, Although I never got to meet my grandpa Getty I know my great grandma Janie is now very happy to see him once again and is living a happy life in heaven with him.
