Janet Carol Greenfield (Miller), age 67, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena on August 16, 2017, due to complications from a stroke she had suffered the week prior. She was born at St. Peter’s Hospital on March 21, 1950, to Joseph Miller and his wife Cecelia Miller (Schlosser).
Jan grew up in Helena and attended St. Mary’s School through eighth grade, graduating from Helena Catholic Central High School in 1968. Shortly after graduation, she earned her certification as a surgical technologist. Her medical career over the years included positions as both a surgical scrub tech and an anesthesia aide at St. Peter’s Hospital. She started working at the Helena SurgiCenter when they opened in 1998, and with a heavy heart she left her work family earlier this year and retired. She touched many lives throughout her years and was well known and highly regarded throughout the medical community.
In June 1972, Janet married Bill Greenfield, and together they brought Jen (1974), Eric (1980), and Chad (1987) into the world. They later divorced in 1997, though Jan remained in Helena. She was also a mother to many cats (too many to count) over the years and could definitely be considered a cat lady.
Jan was extremely proud of her beautiful yard and spent many summer hours tending to her grass, bushes, and flowers. She enjoyed decorating for holidays, baking, shopping, and spending time with family. She hosted many holiday family dinners, creating fond memories for all. Jan was a wonderful storyteller and always had people laughing with her crazy antics.
Anyone who knew Jan will remember her compassion and selflessness. She was always thinking of others before herself and engaged in small acts of kindness both at work and in her personal life.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Larry Miller. She leaves behind her sister, Sharon Milot; her children, Jen Greenfield Kees and her husband Jay, Eric Greenfield and his daughter Dana, Chad Greenfield and his wife Tana; and her niece, Shauna (Wenger) Hance and her husband Kevin.

I remember working with Janet in the OR at St. Peter’s; way back in the mid 1970s. Brings back a lot of fun and fond memories. Always sad to see someone from inside your circle leave us. God bless.

Jan made many nights “on call” worth working. I learned much from her and live that laugh. Never forget slipping Nicolette gum underneath her surgical mask! I will miss you my friend
