Jason “Butch” Lipes
March 2, 1938 – July 30, 2021
Taking the scenic route and hitting every back road to heaven, Jason “Butch” Lipes passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on July 30, 2021.
Butch was born on March 2, 1938, in Helena to Jason H. and Fern (Fuller) Lipes. He was the very first to graduate from the “new” Helena High School in 1955 at which time he joined the Army. After his time in the Army National Guard, he worked at Knapps as a service station attendant. During his time at Knapps he met his wife, Jean. They were married September 15, 1962, at the Nazarene Church in Helena. They had three beautiful children, Trudy, Bonnie and Chuck. Following his time at Knapps he became a truck driver for many years delivering fuel.
A huge change in Butch’s life happened when he was able to leave truck driving to start his own business in Helena as the “Famous Window Welder.” Throughout his years of windshield repair and replacement he gained several lifelong friendships. He retired in 2011 and spent the rest of his life making precious memories with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “Papa Butch” was beyond proud of ALL his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and would give the shirt off his back to help them, if he could get his suspenders off first.
Papa Butch was known for his stories. He could sit you down for hours just so you knew every detail about his hunting trip or how many fish he caught that day. He brought his stories to life when you were out in the mountains with him…every turn on those back roads had a story and he would tell it every time.
Butch enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play on slow pitch softball teams, he was their biggest fan and always cheered them on with a big “ATTAWAY” with every play. Butch and Jean rarely missed a game.
Butch was a member of the Helena Nazarene Church where he dearly loved serving the Lord by greeting all who attended church services.
Butch had many hobbies, besides hunting and fishing, he shot archery, pitched horseshoes, snowmobiled, camped, rode his 4-wheeler and side by side and had many other activities.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, daughters, Trudy Lipes and Bonnie Heller, and sisters, Virginia and Janice.
Butch is survived by his wife, Jean of 58 years, son, Chuck (Kim) of Helena, grandchildren, Amanda (Eric) Huberty, Kalli (Jake) Sharbono, Tyler Heller, Haley (Chris) Gowen, and Chase Lipes, great-grandchildren, Hayden Marie, Lincoln Charles, Loryn Sue and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Butch will always be remembered for his soft heart, contagious smile, sense of humor and his love for the outdoors. Our Montana Hero will remain in our hearts forever.
Celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday August 27th at the Helena Nazarene Church, 117 Valley Drive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent in Butch’s name to the Helena Nazarene Church, 117 Valley Drive, Helena, MT 59601, Encompass (Frontier) Home Health and Hospice, 800 Front Street, Suite 1, Helena, MT 59601 or to the organization of your choice.

I have known Butch since I was a child. So many memories of Fern and Bud, Butch and Jean, Bonnie and Charley, Janice and Blair. Remember when they lived in by the railroad tracks in East Helena in “Moontown.” Jean watched my oldest when he was just weeks old, he is now 44, in their home by the viaduct. He was a good man and will be missed. My sympathies go out to the remaining family and I know he is welcomed by his family that has gone before him. Kristi Doggett Gersch
