On the evening of August 20, 2020, we lost a beloved family member and friend, Jerry Michael Murphy (Big Murph), age 62 to prolonged illness. He passed away peacefully, comforted by his wife and daughter in his final moments.
Mike was born on August 13, 1958 in Butte, Montana to Jerry and Marge Murphy and was a Butte native for his entire life. He was a Butte High graduate and worked for Montana State Prison and Silver Bow County, until his retirement in 2014. He married Patty Moore in July 1981 and had three children, Michael, Amber, and Ryan. They later divorced, but remained friends to this day. He married his wife, Dawn Murphy, on October 25, 2008.
Mike loved spending time with family camping, boating, and traveling. Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing softball, coaching sports, and celebrating his birthday at Rockin’ the Rivers. He was a member of the American Legion, the “Breakfast Club,” and was an avid Packers fan.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Dawn Murphy, his son Michael (Mike) Murphy, daughter Amber (Brian) Killoy, son Ryan (Kella) Murphy, step daughter Jolene (James) Lacey-Wood, and step daughter Melissa (Preston) Whitman. He is also survived by his grandchildren Tevas, Jocyline, Alicen, Justice, Blake, Victoria, Alexandria, Grace, Emma, Kole, Jordy, Beaudin, and Easton. He is also survived by his Auntie Amy Ross, Aunt Molly Murphy-Lundberg, sister Debbie Cartwright, brother Bruce Valley, and numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Marge Murphy and his brothers Jim Owens and Brian Valley.
A reception for friends and family to pay their respects will be held at The McQueen Athletic Club (3250 Hecla St, Butte, MT 59701) on August 28, 2020 from 3:00-7:00pm. Please ensure to bring an appropriate mask and abide by current CDC guidelines.
