Jessie passed away on 9-22-2019 at Golden Options Assisted Living in Montana City.
Jessie was born on Feb. 1st, 1924 in Portis Kansas, the 8th of 10 children born to Janie and George Palmer. Her early years were spent on the family farm, working hard, sitting in the storm cellar waiting for a tornado to pass or cleaning after a dust storm had filled every nook and cranny in the house. She attended school in a one room schoolhouse and had many stories about the long walk with her sisters. After her father passed away and most of her siblings were on their own, her mother moved the remaining sisters to Helena Mt. It was here that she met and married Pete Nick on January 7, 1946. Pete had grown up on a homestead just south of East Helena.
Before getting married, she and her sisters went to California to work in one of the many defense plants during World War II. But after the war it was straight back to Montana.
Through the years Jessie worked at the Secretary of State’s office, at the phone company as an operator and at Fort Harrison as a medical transcriber. She and Pete moved around the area often as Pete would purchase, remodel and then sell the home to increase their income.
She enjoyed dancing, fishing at the causeway, crocheting and visiting with friends and family.
Pete passed away on February 1st 1989, and her eldest son, Monte, passed away on February 19th. 2017. Jessie is survived by one sister, Wanda Williams of Helena, one brother in law, John Martello of Kalispell and sister in law, Josephine Driscoll of San Diego. Rhonda Robertson says
To the family of Jesse,
I was saddened to her of Jesse’s passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy.
I grew up west of the Nick family on Custer Avenue. They lived in the house that, up until recently was the Early Bird Café. My sister Cindy and I rode the bus and went to school with their kids.
I had seen Jesse several times over the years but most recently this last Spring, when my Mother, Sharon Strainer was in the short-term Apple Cooney Rehab. I would visit my Mom several times a day and take her for a stroll in her wheel chair where we would stop and visit with Jesse as she was a resident in the long term care unit at Apple Cooney. I was in awe of her beauty in her youth, but found that she was still so beautiful at 95. She was always dressed to a tee, with matching necklace and bracelet and smelled so sweet. She always welcomed us and we had some warm conversations. These visits surely brightened our day.
I pray that all the wonderful memories you hold close within your heart with sustain you in the days ahead. My Mom passed on May 31st, and although you try to prepare yourself, I found it to be the most difficult time of my life. There is nothing more precious than a Mother’s Love.
God gives us comfort in the form of family and friends. May his peace be with you, His love never ends.
Rhonda (Strainer)Robertson
Pat Snider says
Greg, Jeannie and Melinda, my thoughts and prayers are with each of you and your families. I am Pat Snider, but if you remember me at all, it would be as Pat Englund, wife of Gary and daughter-in-law of your Aunt Dani. I have fond memories of your mother, but, unfortunately, none very recent. I found her to be a delight to be around. The last time I did have the opportunity to visit with her it was outside, Cooney Home as she had just been there to visit a friend and I was leaving after having visited with my mother. I agree with your friend, Rhonda, as I found the loss of my mother left a huge hole in my life. It is hard realizing you are now at the top of the generation line-up. You are now a part of the old folks, as viewed by your kids. And, after you have adjusted to that, you suddenly realize you now have no one to whom you can go for answers regarding family members, gatherings, etc from the past as the family historian is now a part of that past. However, you also soon find you can adjust to that new part of your life also. Now you get to be the one to answer the questions, but don’t get upset if one of you remembers the event in question differently than your siblings might as we all remember those events as we each experienced them and those memories might be shaded by each one’s life experiences at that time.
Enough. I will leave you with a prayer for each of you to receive God’s peace as only He can give. (John 14:27) Take care and remember she and your dad are now both looking down and marveling at how well each of you have turned out in this game called life.
Mattilynn says
When I was a little girl we would play games togher. I am sad she is not here is she was I would be playing a game with her right now.
