Joan L. Gies, age 84, of Helena

We announce the passing of Joan Louise Gies on June 30, 2018 at Edgewood Living Center in Helena, Montana. She was born December 1, 1933 to Emery and Elizabeth Baumgardner in Yakima, Washington, the second youngest of 8.

A very creative and caring woman, Joan was involved in many forms of Much of her talent could be seen in her cosmetology. She owned and operated the Chalet Beauty Salon in the Helena Valley for 30 years. She was also known for her love of the holidays and her exciting parties, decorations, and costumes. She was a lover of music and singing. She was a member of the local chapter of the Sweet Adaline’s- a female barbershop quartet. Joan was cared for by her large family and because of that, enjoyed living in various places with many of them after she retired.

Above all though, Joan loved God and was a devout Catholic.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Donald Gies Sr. and her oldest son Karl Gies. She is survived by her children: Eugenie Ruggles, Danold Gies Jr., Michelle Boone, Donna Canright, and Joseph Gies, as well as all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Viewing will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018 with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Retz Funeral Home Chapel, 315 E. 6th Ave. A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2018 at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 7100 N.
