Joe Abinico Velarde went to be with Jesus after a long battle with dementia and Alzeimer’s on March 27, 2011.
Born on September 1, 1927 to Joseph and Emelia Velarde, Joe spent his childhood years in Dawson, NM and southern Colorado. He was a ranch hand for most of his adult life, turning to the Laborers Union in his early forties until his retirement.
He loved to fish and hunt. He was a master at playing jacks and would often challenge his children to a hearty game. Dad liked to cook hot Mexican food and play pinochle with family and friends over coffee. He enjoyed long walks and grew a mean garden. Dad was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and watched his team win Super Bowl XLV.
He was married to Yvonne Gay in 1959 and Yvonne continues to reside in Helena.
His father and mother; sisters, Margaret, Addie and Emma preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Mary Gonzales of Sunnyside, Utah; his children, Sheila Velarde of Helena, Jo Ann (Mike) Copeland of East Helena, Stephan Velarde of Helena, Lillian (Ed) Tovey of Helena, Patsy (Keith) Goble of Gillette, WY, Brandy (Charlie) Armstrong of Oak Harbor, WA; stepdaughter, Lola Hagerty; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joe will be laid to rest in Grand Junction, Colorado with his father and two sisters. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.aswfuneralhome.com.

I am so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing, but he led a long and fulfiling life. He was a wonderful man with a kind spirit. I got to know Joe when I was Manager of Eagles Manor. I pray that God will give all of you peace that Joe is in Heaven now watching over all of you. He loved his family so much and always had a smile on his face. My prayers and condolences go out to you all.
Joe, may you rest in peace in the arms of your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
God Bless you all!
