John Douglas Hartman, age 69, died peacefully at home on July 3, 2016 surrounded by family. John is survived by his 93 year old mother, Gwen Hartman of Helena, and his wife of 40 years, Peg Hartman. John was preceded in death by his father, Peter Hartman, son, Kelly, and sister, Roberta.
John is also survived by his siblings: Mary Carol (Clyde Vidrine), David (Jane), Peter (Kristi) Michaelan (Jim DeHerrera), Paul (Sandy); Brother-in-law, Tom Cole; Sister-in-law, Patti Nelson, and Honorary Sister, Devon Hartman (Dale Smith); Daughters, Cory (Neil Buchanan), and Katy (Jason Nelson); and grandchildren, Caleb Hartman, Spencer, Ashley, and Ethan Nelson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
John was born January 31, 1947, in San Francisco, California, where his father Pete Hartman was attending mortuary school. The family moved back to Great Falls, Montana where John attended St. Gerard’s and Great Falls Central, developing many lifelong friends. He graduated from Carroll College and completed a Master’s degree at Montana State University. John began his teaching career in 1969 at Helena High, where he taught history for 40 years, almost all in the same classroom, where a plaque in his honor, still hangs today. John was chosen to receive a distinguished educator award eight times by his students, and delivered the commencement address to the graduating class at Helena High in 2009, when he retired.
John and Peg married in 1975. John chose to become a wonderful father to Kelly and Cory, and the family celebrated Katy’s birth in 1979. John’s life was blessed with the opportunity to serve others, and he was a dedicated lifelong Catholic, and also served on various committees at Trico Credit Union, and enjoyed volunteering for the East Helena Food Share for several years.
John was blessed with four grandchildren, who remember their Papa as kind, patient, intelligent, and compassionate. He was a walking fountain of knowledge, told the coolest stories, taught the kids how to do front flips off the boat, took them on many fun adventure trips, took part in rope swing jumping, 4-wheeling, cooked amazing burgers, and had a terrific sense of humor. He was simply the best, no question.
John spent much of his retirement with his grandkids, as well as traveling and experiencing history and local brews in Mexico, Hawaii, Ireland, Normandy, Budapest, Paris, and many others locations. John absolutely loved to host family and friends at the Hartman Hut, as well as on his pontoon boat, at Canyon Ferry and Camp Tuffit.
John was passionate about teaching and guiding kids, and was a living example of love, faith, and goodness, offering his wisdom and guidance in the most humble of ways, and made all those around him feel loved and accepted. This gentle man would ask all those left behind to be strong, support one another with kindness, and never forget how much you are loved. Bidden or unbidden, the Lord is with you all.
The family would like to thank St. Peter’s Cancer Treatment Center and Hospice Staff, and Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home for their amazing professionalism and genuinely kind support.
The family will begin receiving friends at 9:00 a.m. with a Rosary to be prayed at 10:00 a.m. and funeral Mass to be celebrated immediately following the Rosary at SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in East Helena. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery immediately following the funeral Mass. A reception will then be held at Fox Ridge Golf Course.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Helena Food Share at 1616 Lewis Street, Helena, Montana 59601.

Sending thoughts and prayers to quiet your minds comfort your hearts, and soothe your souls. John’s with and intelligence will be missed. Although I expressed my gratitude to him, I’m not sure he realized what an incredible difference he made in the life of my child, Matthew. I am so grateful to John for being a powerful mentor and a wonderful colleague. God bless you, his family, and help you find peace with his passing.
Teresa Graham says
Peggy, Corey and Katie, My heart goes out to you and all of the Hartman family. What an incredible person John was. He was such a kind and loving man. As an educator and a friend to so many people he made a lasting impression that will carry on for years to come. I will miss his great smile and sense of humor. I thought the world of him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Greg Wald says
Hartman Family,
John was my mentor at Helena High from the day I walked into the school. He was one of the wisest and kindest people I know. I feel your loss and will always hold his memory in my heart.
Terry Tenneson-Kirkeby says
“Mr. Hartman” was my favorite teacher of all times! We always thought we were getting away with something when we got him side tracked with telling his funny stories. When you got “exempt” from tests because you had good grades, that was the icing on the cake! Even though I graduated from HHS in 1979 and have been teaching myself for 30 years, the remembrance of him and his love of teaching still brings a smile to my face! He was truly a wonderful person and definitely made a difference in the lives of others! My thoughts are with his family and friends.
Richard Lundgren says
My heart goes out to John’s family in this difficult time. I only knew John for a few years in high school and had a short visit I believe at the 20 year reunion.
Ursula Brese says
I will think of John and his family fondly, Comp Tuffet, which was amazing, and met his awesome family, and in visiting with Patti Kay, so always felt like they were my extended family. You will be missed, but am sure you are up there telling stories or giving a history lesson. Prayers and hugs to all.
Linda Loudermilk Walter says
May God hold you in his arms, to help you through this time of loss. I went to high school with John and have not been in touch since 65, I am sorry to say. It sounds like he grew into a very wonderful man, husband, father and teacher for many. God blessed all of you with John. May your memories sustain you all. Blessings and prayers.
Michele Penberthy says
John was a quiet giant, I often walked to school with him in high school and shared our life thoughts as shy souls. Condolences to all of his family and his many friends.

John and I spent many hours together doing outdoor activities. Camping, hunting, fishing, and 4 wheeling. We taught together for most of our careers and I grew a great deal as a teacher just watching John interact with kids! He was an inspiration to many. He will be missed.
Peace!

I can only think of him as “Mr. Hartman” – he was my teacher in 1971. I remember him as being a wonderful person and amazing teacher. One of my favorites. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Cristy (Harris) Eslick says
Mr. Hartman. My Favorite High School Teacher. He was my history teacher for two years between 1972 and 1974. I remember not being able to get better than a “D” in history until Mr. Hartman. He made the subject fun and went the extra mile to help his students learn. I remember he and his wife inviting several student to their home to help us prepare for tests. I passed a history test for the first time with a “98” because of his devotion. He truly loved teaching and cared for his students, All of them. Blessing and peace to his family.
Wendy Vick says
Oh boy when I got my list of classes in the 11th grade. MR HARTMAN for US History. OH NO!!! But I ended up loving Mr. Hartman and his class so much that I was his Teachers Aid the next year! He was wonderful and so very funny. I am so sorry Peggy and family. I am sending a lot of hugs and love your way. He was a great man.
Danny Buchanan says
Hartman Family,
John will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to you all. John, and you all showed us a great time spending the day on the lake and swimming.
John was a good person, left good memories.
Peace be with you.

Peg and Family:
My condolences to all of you. I taught with John at Helena High many moons ago. During that time, I often visited with John often about everything from teaching to religion to politics and life in general. He became a mentor to me and a friend. When my mother died after a year-long bout with cancer, John visited me at my home when I needed a spiritual boost and later took me fishing as I went through the grieving process. His sense of humor, his love of life and his love of God inspired me. He was a great man and I will remain forever grateful to him for his kindnesses and friendship.
Gob bless him and all of you!

I remember Mr. Hartman as the tall, lanky, pensive, American History teacher in 1987, who always asked how you were holding up -and meant it- and offered words of encouragement. And of course as the father of Katy, my little sister’s long-time BFF. Blessings and Peace to the Family…

This angel touched our lives in ways I can’t find to describe. I know Callie Marie is in his kind, strong arms at this very moment. The world has lost another angel. To the Hartman family: thanks for the love you have all shared with us, through John.

Mr. Hartman was one of my favorite teachers at Helena High. He really made history come alive and I loved the stories he would tell that weren’t in the history books. I want to offer my condolences to all of you. He was a great teacher, in and out of the classroom.

Brittany Buchholz says
What a wonderful man. He will be so missed. I still remember taking history from him and every now and again we knew we were getting a treat as he would lean back to peek down the hall to make sure all was clear so he could tell us stories like “hook man.” I’m so happy I got to know him.

Scott Ireland says
Mr. Hartman, absolutely one of my favorite teachers at Helena High. His class was not an easy one for me, but the way he told and explained history made it all the better. He was a wonderful teacher and human. He also had a love for my mother’s oatmeal raisen cookies, which may or may not have helped me with my grades. He will be missed, my thoughts go out to his family in this difficult time. Rest in peace Mr. Hartman.
Kathy Johnson Bahny says

Peg and family,
I cannot begin to tell you how sad I am to learn of John’s passing. He was a tremendous man, an extraordinary educator, and an invaluable mentor and friend to me. We had many fine talks about education, how to make a difference in our students lives, and our love for our families as we stood at the top of the hallway in the social studies wing at Helena High School. I am so sorry for your loss and although I will not be able to attend John’s service on Monday, as I need to take my daughter to college orientation, please now I am sending prayers.
Sincerely,
Lona

I loved his sense of humor, and always felt uplifted in his presence. John will be greatly missed. He will most certainly remain in our collective memories and hearts!

Katy-
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I absolutely adored him and goodness knows he put up with us girls as squealing little middle schoolers with our sleepover’s in the basement that we always promised to keep “super quiet”! He was always amazingly patient with us and was so wonderful hauling us girls all over the place here and there..
Peg-
I am so sorry to hear about John, you guys were an amazing part of my pre-teen years and loved you both to pieces. I’m sure he is teaching everyone a thing or two and sharing his amazing knowledge with a number of new amazing people.

Audrey Blomquist says
Peg, Corey, and Katie – sending you my love and prayers during this very sad time. John was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, teacher, and friend. I treasure many wonderful Hartman family gatherings and memories that I was a part of. John always made me feel loved and welcome as part of the extended family. His witty and charming personality made me feel special, but I think he made everyone feel that way. I am truly blessed to know him and grateful I was able to see him recently. Words cannot express the sadness I feel for you and your family. Sending you healing prayers and love knowing that his suffering is now over and he is the arms of the Lord.
Steve Armstrong says
I was saddened to learn of John’s passing. I taught with John in the history department at Helena High. For about ten years or so, we shared the infamous Rooms 8 & 9 – John in Room 8 and me in Room 9 – with the silliest “curtain” dividing the rooms. The curtain rarely closed properly, which meant that we could hear his lectures and stories coming from Room 8 and I’m sure he and his students could hear our shenanigans emanating from Room 9. John kindly took over the AP history class when we were on sabbatical in 1988-89, and graciously returned the AP history class to me upon our return. It is obvious that John made a difference in the lives of his students and to others he touched throughout his life. My sympathies to his family.
Linnea Ghilardi says
John was a truly remarkable person, so kind and thoughtful. When I first became a Catholic, I was confused by several little things. One Sunday at the 7AM mass, I must have looked lost, because John came up to me and asked if I was confused. Of course I was and told him so. Then he carefully and thoughtfully explained what was confusing, and I remember it to this day and think of him each mass! We taught at HHS in the history department together for years, and he was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. I remember my first week at HHS, when John and I shared “noon duty” to keep the kids in line. He made it fun! My sympathies to you on your loss, and God bless you always.
DEBBIE MURGEL SCHRAMM says
He was a very kind and a good teacher. I enjoyed his class, he taught you a lot about history. I bought him a wallet for xmas when I had him as a teacher and he always remembered that. He was very good person and was willing to help in anyway. He will be missed by all. I am sorry for your loss, he will be remembered by many. May he rest in peace and be remembered by the people he taught and the hearts he touched. May he rest in peace.
Betty Cure says
We are saddened by John’s passing. Mary Carol, I remember our childhood at St Gerard’s. the years have passed, but the memories are alive……Your Brother …a Gentle Giant~
Joseph Anderson and family says
Peg and Family,
Such sadness Melissa and I feel this moment for the loss of John. I traveled many trails with him…wore out many moccasins with the brother…
four years at Carroll in the history program and another 40 years teaching in the Helena School District. We retired together from HHS. It was there in his room or mine where we shared so many private moments laughing, reminiscing and storytelling. He has left his mark on his students, his colleagues and the community. Rest in peace, friend.
Our prayers are with his family and all who loved him.
Morgan Davis says
I transferred as a new student into Mr. Hartman’s class. As the new kid, he always asked how I was doing. The following year, I specifically asked to have him as a teacher for US History. Having a great man like Mr. Hartman as a teacher twice was definitely a blessing. He became my favorite teacher, prepared me for college and beyond, and hearing his stories like “Hook Man” for two years was an added bonus. My condolences to his family.
Marcia Wall says
Hello Peg and family ~ My heart aches for you and all his family and friends. John was one of a kind and had the qualities of a successful and loving person in this world! I didn’t know he was ill and so sad and shocked to hear of his death. He would come into my office in the Counseling Center at HHS and we would thoroughly discuss “students in need” and his heart was huge and so compassionate! He also wanted each and every one to tow the line and LEARN history! His creativeness and gifted deliverance of facts and stories was like no other! I will make a donation to Angel Fund for John and know that a child in need will benefit in his name. He was a true gift to education and the teaching profession! He also loved you Peg and his family! So proud of all that belonged in his inner circle. You will remember moments not days and your memories will sustain your soul. He was one of the good guys and his spirit will live on through the halls at Helena High and with each of us that knew this amazing man! God bless you all! I will always remember my friend and colleague John Hartman. With love and sympathy, Marcia xo

May the wonderful memories of you and John sustain you!

Peg and family,
I was saddened to hear of John’s passing. He had a reputation as being a wonderful, inspiring teacher at Helena High. My son, Ryan, became very interested in history because of him. He considered himself very lucky to have had John as a teacher and totally enjoyed the class and John. He was definitely a favorite teacher.
My condolences to you and your family, Peg. Having recently lost my husband to cancer, I know how difficult it is. It is the good memories and especially the love and concern of family and friends which makes it bearable. My thoughts and prayers are with you. At some point if you would like to get together to talk, let me know. It would probably be good for both of us.❤️ Deb Johnson

Grief never ends,
But it changes.
It’s a passage
Not a place to stay.
Grief is not a sign of weakness
Nor a lack of faith
It is the price of love.
Hold close all the beautiful memories of John. ❤️

Micheal Finch says
Mr. Hartman was an amazing teacher. He was the type to push a student and get every bit of potential out of the students, his stories about history captivated us into wanting to learn about it. Teachers like him are very few and far between. Hope the hofbrau is open in heaven Mr. Hartman!
Paulette Hutcheon says
John was a teacher with high expectations and depth of both knowledge and heart. Working with him was an honor. I am sad that such a thoughtful, dynamic, warm being is no longer with us.
Robert Jewell says
Combine the joy and enthusiasm of Labrador puppy at the lake, a very bright human mind, the story telling of Mark Twain, and the soul of an angel …and you have John Hartman.
I grew up as a friend and classmate of John’s at St. Gerard Grade School and Great Falls Central High School. We made many fun memories together fishing, playing sports, etc. I then experienced the continuing fun with John as a colleague at Helena High. I have been truly blessed to have so much John in my life! Have you ever met anyone who smiled more?!
After my having hosted a first St. Gerard Grade School Reunion at my home last summer, John told me that it was the best party he had ever been to -every time he saw me afterward! As you would expect, John himself was a big reason that the party was the best. I was looking forward to his being at my second reunion …at which he will no doubt be present with his huge smile and great laugh.
I love you, my friend John, and miss you a lot already. Keep my Mom and Dad entertained UP There …but please don’t tell them ALL of our stories as kids.
Nikki Cory says
My condolences to the Hartman family. Mr Hartman was my favorite teacher in high school. Though I flunked his class, I still enjoyed his teaching and funny stories. He knew my learning ability and fought for me to get into a US Govt class my senior year where I would excel. Awesome teacher and man!
Lee Kenney says
I was saddened to hear of John’s passing. While we worked together for just a few years, I remember well his excellent work as a history teacher. If there is but one word to describe John and his work, it is excellence.
Katie Hodges-Kluck says
My mom convinced me to take John’s World History class when I was a sophomore at Helena High in 1998. John’s enthusiasm and dedication to the subject and his students helped inspire me to become a teacher and historian myself. I completed my PhD in History last year, and dedicated my dissertation in part to him (I have long intended to send him a copy, and I regret that I did not do so in time). I owe John a great deal, and the world is a sadder place without him. My condolences to all the family.
Jeff King says
John taught me current events in 1970. As an older person now we don’t remember all of our teachers but we’d certainly never forget a guy like John Hartman. He was not just what a teacher should be but what a person should be… I don’t know the family but I wish them all peace. This old world lost a steady guy.
Amy Opitz Crawford says
I too was so shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Hartman’s passing. He was easily one of my favorite teachers. As he taught US History, he made you feel as though he’d had dinner with some of our former presidents the night before. He knew them intimately–he knew everything from their personalities to their quirks, their families, their foreign policies and everything in between. He was such an amazing storyteller!
He left his mark on countless students who were lucky enough to have him for a teacher. He was definitely one in a million.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Terri Norman says

So sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. You may not remember me, but we did spend some time together along with Tammy Miller senior year! Lots of fun we had!! I had your dad as a teacher junior year of high school. He was one of the nicest teachers around. So kind and patient to all of us crazy kids. He was always smiling and just a true gem. My prayers go out to your family.

Dear Peg, I am sitting outside my travel trailer at West Yellowstone thinking of John and hisvpassing. What a fifficult time for you. He always made me laugh when I saw him out and about. I can still see the twinkle in his eyes. We just drove pass your place on July 1st on our way to Hell gate Campground and remarked what a great homeplace you 2 built for the enjoyment of many; a house, barn, and gazebo plus the toys, pontoon boat and speed boat and 4 wheeler, I bet, all building memories for your children and grandchildren at The Hartman Encampment. Peg, I will be out soon to visit with you. Sobsorry for you loss and know I am thinking of you. Love and hugs around, Ann

Kati G. Kintli says
Mr. Hartman was and remains my favorite teacher (and I’ve been to college and law school). He made History so interesting and and actually fun to learn. By doing so, he made me realize its importance in our lives. As a result of his influence, I majored and received my B.A. in History at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. I graduated from Helena High long ago, but whenever the subject of teachers or college majors comes up in conversation – to this day – I always mention my favorite History teacher and his impact on me and my love of History. My heart goes out to Mr. Hartman’s family for their loss. I am hopeful that knowing the incredible positive impact he had on his students gives them some measure of comfort and peace.
Peg Hunter says
Peg and family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of John’s death. I remember with great fondness our gourmet dinner club gatherings and John’s wonderful stories. Both Tia and Jeff were fortunate to be in John’s history classes and to be inspired by his exceptional teaching, rigorous expectations, and kindness.

Mr. Hartman was amazing teacher, i’m really thankful for his lessons and the knowledge the passed to his students. As an exchange student i had quite short time to know him, but I do still remember Mr. Hartman as a very good person and outstanding teacher. Спите спокойно, дорогой Учитель!
