John Patrick Meyer passed away peacefully on October 15, 2022, at the age of 77. Family members and friends offered comfort and support to John at his bedside in Beehive Homes of Helena, formerly Legacy Assisted Living.
John was born in Helena, Montana on July 3, 1945, to Edward and Frances Meyer. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Gerhard Meyer, his mother Frances Margaret Meyer, and his stepdaughter, Brenda Louise Gloege-Schnittgen.
John attended the A. G. Academy in Reno and Johnson Flying Service in Missoula to train as a pilot. After completing his coursework and flight hours, he received a commercial and instrument fixed wing license, a multi-engine license, a flight instructor license, and a commercial helicopter license. In addition to training student pilots, he did some crop dusting and worked for the US Postal Service flying mail runs.
After his work as a pilot, John was hired as the construction superintendent for Montana Mobile Homes, Inc. to oversee all phases of construction for the Leisure Village Mobile Home Community.
In 1974, John went to work for the State of Montana in the Workers Compensation Division. From there, he went to the Montana Department of Labor and Industry and worked as a State Building Codes Inspector before retiring in 2007.
John was an accomplished woodworking craftsman who designed and built custom furniture and cabinets for his home. His family often ribbed him about his attention to detail and his dedication to flawless design and construction. The numerous pieces he built will forever be treasured as family heirlooms.
In addition to woodworking, John was also a talented welder who designed, built, and patented Big John’s™ Industrial Log Splitter. Friends always knew where to find him – he was in his shop working on the latest project for himself or others.
John always had time to shoot the breeze with friends and acquaintances. As a lifelong resident of Helena, it seemed as if he knew everyone in town. If anyone needed anything, John was quick to offer advice and lend a hand with a building project or a repair. When Big John showed up, Big John took charge – everyone knew the job would be done right!
John is survived by Sharon Meyer, Helena; stepson, Cory (Shelly) Gloege, Helena; brothers, Dennis (Molly) Meyer, Tacoma, Washington; Michael Meyer, Phoenix, Arizona; and Bruce (Joan) Meyer, Helena. John has 3 granddaughters, Morgan (Matt) Sauer, Helena; Sharae (Jake) Gloege, Augusta; and RaeAnna Schnittgen, Helena. John will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews, Jennifer (Tauseef) Meyer, Kirk (Eleanor) Meyer, Michael Shane Meyer, Jillian Meyer, Tracey Meyer, Jessica (Benjamin) Meyer, and Nicole Meyer. John has 4 great granddaughters, Brayleigh, Elise, Kilynn, and Maci, and 1 great grandson, Maxton. John thoroughly enjoyed and cherished his great grandchildren. “We will love you forever Papa.”

To the Meyer famly…. I am so sorry for your loss. I met John in high school, he was a year ahead of me, and we became friends. I think he thought of me as a little sister! My family lived down the road from his. He took me riding on his motorcycle many times. Just riding and talking. He truly was one of the good guys even then. Fond memories and fun stories to remember. Lost track of him when I moved after high school. Sounds like he had a good life. Rest in peace, my friend. Ride with the wind! May all of you, his family, find comfort in the fact that he is at peace, and was obviously well loved and liked by all. God bless you all.

To John’s family, my heart is broken to hear of johns Passing the loss of his friendliness his willing to help everybody with anything and his many many talents. My Jim and John we’re best buddies for many years. I know they must be in heaven together fixing things creating things. John came offered to help Jim with projects he was working on around the house and they worked very well together at the state. John was such a friendly outgoing person‘s. And he had the courage to do the steady boxing which I thought was very impressive and I will be sending a donation there. So very unfortunate that Parkinson’s came upon John. John always took very good care of his Mom, He was just that kind of guy.
