John (Jack) R. Quigley, 79 of Elliston, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2013. Jack was born at St. Joseph’s hospital in Deer Lodge, Montana on August 8, 1934 to John R. and Marguerite (Kirwan) Quigley. Jack, the oldest of three children, was reared in the Avon area. He attended grade school in Avon and high school in Helena. He married Janice Barton on March 17, 1953. Jack and Janice lived in the Avon and Elliston area, reared five children and divorced in 1968. Jack had a variety of jobs in his life time; he worked for his father at Frontier Town, was an airplane mechanic in Alaska, worked on the Great Northern Railroad, was an employee at the Elliston Lime Plant, and was a heavy equipment operator. A zealous personality made him a successful insurance salesman. In his later years while living in Arizona Jack repaired, rebuilt, and sold bicycles.
Jack was mechanically inclined, ingenious, and creative in things he set his mind and hands to. Jack was very interested in solar energy and water generated electricity. He built solar panels to harness the sun’s energy and heat the water in his home. He also used the stream on his property to generate electricity, charging the batteries that powered the lights in his home. Jack loved wildlife, outdoor adventures, and the mountains and streams of Montana. Elk hunting was one of his favorite past times; he didn’t talk much about his hunting success, but if you rode along with Jack you always had a good story to tell! He enjoyed reading and books were never far from his reach. His home was built with salvaged materials and decorated with collected antiques and artifacts. Like his father, Jack held a special appreciation and interest in family and early Montana history.
Those who have gone on before Jack are: his mother Marguerite; father John; step mother Sue Quigley; brother Peter Quigley; the mother of his children Janice Keil; daughter Anna Marie Quigley; granddaughter Chelsey Quigley; great granddaughter Maria Gregor.
Jack’s surviving relatives includes: sister, Kitty Ann (Quigley) Taaler and her husband Aavo of Helena; half-brother Eric Boehmer of Washington; children, Linda (Quigley) Moore and her husband Steve of Tulsa Oklahoma, John and Colleen Quigley of Elliston, Clyde and Peggy Quigley of Elliston, Robert and Chrissy Quigley of Elliston; ten grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren: Lance (Sarah) Schwabauer of Matamata, New Zealand and their children Caleb, Elisa, and Kelly Jack; LeAnn (Michael) Harrison of Helena and their children, Seth, Bryceton, Isaiah, and Jenna; John “J.R.” (Janny) Quigley of Helena and their children, Kylie, Joelle, Grace, and John; Candace (Zach) Marshall of Helena and their children, Quinn, Serena, and Asher; Philip Quigley of Elliston; Julia Quigley of Elliston and her children, Skyler and Gidian; Rylee Quigley of Helena; Garrett Quigley of Bozeman; Jared Quigley of Elliston; Emily Quigley of Elliston; nieces Taegan and Nicholette; nephew Scott; cousins Jim, Sheila, Emmett, Kathy, and Theresa.

Our family is so sorry for your loss of your father. I have many many memories of growing up with all of you. Your dad and my dad loved to hunt together and you’re right there was always a story about the days hunt. After we lost our dad almost 14 years ago he and my mom kept in touch. A lifelong friendship was what my folks had with yours. And us kids became like brothers and sisters. May you all find comfort in each other. At this time. Even tho Jack was ill and had been thru so much in his life it never prepares the heart for the loss if his earthly body. I can bet my dad was waiting for him on the other side as well as those who have gone before him. Our love thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. And our love for you all will be for all of our lives. Rest in peace Jack and know you were loved here in earth.

Kitty Ann, I have fond and fun memories of Jack during our growing up years, when we were next door neighbors on Raleigh St. A few times we nearly met our demise together. Especially I remember the things he built. And I helped or probably got in the way. The enclosed cart that we navigated down the Raleigh hill had an insufficient brake for sure. My sympathy to you and to all of Jack’s family.

Aloha to Uncle Jack…. growing up with Uncle Jack was the best, he helped make Elliston a magical place with his stories of the gold mining era and throw in a few of his wild times and there ya have it a local legend is made. Jack will always be remembered as being a great neighbor and friend to our family, heck he adopted our family. We miss you…. much Mahalo! Q-tip
