Obituary of John “Jack” Schubert Smith
On June 18, 2022, Jack passed away peacefully at Rocky Mountain Care Center in Helena MT following a long illness. Jack was 95 years old.
He was the only child of S. Guy and Bertha Smith born in Great Falls, MT on January 23, 1927.
Always a proud Marine, Jack entered the service in February 1945 as soon as he graduated. His father actually received his diploma – because Jack was already in basic training. He served in China and the Philippines. Upon his return from the service, he bought a Shovelhead Harley Davidson in LA. The motorcycle needed to be built before he could ride it home!! He enjoyed riding to school at Montana State and regaled us with stories of Icey roads and hot coffee.
After school, he was managing the Marlow Theater in Helena and met a Candy Girl named Myrna Lang. After a brief Courtship, they Married in 1953. Jack took a job at the Montana Power Company and he and Myrna moved out to Hauser Dam. He was an Operator at Hauser till 1967 when he was transferred to Billings. From Billings he was promoted back to Hauser as the Superintendent in 1973. He ran Hauser Dam until his retirement in 1988. His second career was keeping the books at Jamie’s West Side Welding and later Capital Collision. He very much enjoyed both careers and the relationships he developed.
Music played a big part in his life. He never played an instrument, but he enjoyed listening to music. He had live recordings of Charlie Pride from when he played the local bars in Helena in the 50’s. He collected albums and enjoyed playing 78’s on his parent’s player. He recorded music on reel to reel and collected cassettes and later cd’s.
Jack is survived by his Wife of 69 years, Myrna, his daughter, Angela and granddaughters Brianna Moore (Kyle) and Samantha Branon (Joe) and great grandchildren Lance Moore, James Moore, Dallas Branon, Korbin Branon and Marley Branon.

With Heavy Heart and a deep abiding Love for ‘Jack’ and his memory: He was a mentor, with vast experience and knowledge of the worldly process and ways (which he loved to share his experiences through discussion and storyline), a guide for many activities and actions, and a wonderful friend and confidant. Jack was a man of extremely rare patience, and caring! I will miss his presence in our lives forever! For Myrna and Angela and the remaining family and Grandkids, I am wishing and hoping the warmest of blessings of Peace and Harmony in his absense, Thankfullness for his past presence and wisdom in our lives, and for his release so his spirit can fly with Godspeed to the heavens, where ‘This Gentleman and Scholar of Life and Love’ belongs, Now and Forever! Grandest blessings of Love and Life Fullfillment to you, John S.”Jack’ Smith – May your reign in the Heaven’s Feel the LOVE, your memory will Remain in my heart Forever!

Myrna & Angie – I am so sorry to hear of Jack’s passing. Reading his obituary brought back so many memories, from Bertie (my grandma’s neighborhood buddy), to Hauser dam & the Power Company, & then memories on Mustang Rd. Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss.

Myrna: I am sorry for your loss. Was just visiting with Jamie, Lynn, Brad and Bob last week and we talked about Jack and you. This was before we learned of Jack’s passing. Jack was a pleasure to work with and I will always remember his subtle humor and his accounting professionalism. Thank you for your friendship over the years.

Jack Smith, always the consummate gentleman. A pleasure to work with, and to serve. I have missed him since his retirement in 1988 from Montana Power Co. Blessed to have known him!
