John Terence Flynn, 59, passed away from complications of congestive heart failure on May 28, 2012 while on a short holiday in San Francisco.
John was born to William (Bill) Warren Flynn and Lorena Hurd Flynn on July 23, 1952. He was born in Bozeman, Montana, but lived his life in Townsend. John married Deborah Ann Whitehurst on July 24, 1999 at the Dry Creek Cabin near Townsend.
John had no military affiliation or experience.
John was educated in the Townsend public school system and graduated in the BHS class of 1970. He attained a BA in History-Political Science at the University of Montana in 1974; he earned his law degree at the University of Montana in 1977.
His principle occupations were Broadwater County Attorney, Townsend City Attorney, and had a private legal practice. John’s first employment as an attorney was as a legal clerk for Judge Peter Meloy in Helena. At the age of 25, he was elected Broadwater County Attorney, the youngest county attorney in Montana state history. He held that office for almost 34 consecutive years. John maintained a private practice office in Three Forks, MT for many years and focused primarily on estate planning, real estate and water rights.
John is survived by his spouse, Deborah Whitehurst Flynn, of Townsend. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Eileen Boharski Flynn, of Bozeman. Surviving children are Meagan Flynn Mesmer (Aaron) of Shawnee, KS, and Molly Flynn of Seattle, WA. Surviving grandchildren are Asher Aaron Mesmer and one on the way! Surviving siblings include Claudia Evans of Eureka, MT and Ted Flynn of Townsend. He is survived by his aunt, Louise Flynn, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and many first, second and third cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents, William (1989) and Lorena (1993) and a brother, William Flynn (1957).
Viewing hours will begin at 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, June 2nd at Trailhead Christian Fellowship Church with the family to receive friends at 5:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 3rd at Broadwater High School Gymnasium in Townsend. Burial will follow at Deep Creek Cemetery. A reception will be held at the high school in the multi-purpose room immediately following the burial. To John’s family, WE are out of town and just learned of John’s passing. I can’t tell you how sad I am to lose this wonderful man. He was a dedicated public servant, a gifted author, and a friend to everyone he met. This world just won’t be the same without him.

My brother and I spent a great deal of our youth roaming Dry Creek and staying at Flynn’s Cabin with the Flynn family. Only the passage of time reveals the great influence those days brought. I was so sorry to hear of John’s passing he will truely be missed at the courthouse. He always had one of his dry jokes for me whenever we would pass in the halls of the courthouse, and what will we do without his secret recipe for chicken at the courthouse potlucks?
