Jon “Brent” Overstreet passed away May 17, 2023. He was born October 29, 1958, in Garland Texas to Jan and Aline (Ryan) Overstreet. He graduated from Berkner High school in Richardson, Texas.
Brent’s mother later married Don Mervicker, living in Richardson, TX. Brent and his brothers enjoyed the years playing in the woods at Lake Texoma on the weekends and in the parks and streets of Richardson. Brent’s wonderful, friendly, and happy personality as well as his strong value system of discipline, honesty, love, and caring were formed growing up in the Mervicker household.
Brent’s mother passed away when he was eighteen. Don later married Alice Rabal.
Growing up, Brent enjoyed baseball and would spend countless hours in the backyard throwing pitches at the chain link fence causing it to form a permanent bow in the fence.
Brent also enjoyed time spent at the family hunting compound near Brownwood where family and friends would gather for hunting, card games, telling stories and playing pranks on one another.
Following high school Brent proudly served the U.S. Navy from 1978 – 1984. As an Aviation AntiSubmarine Warfare Technician Brent performing operational, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of the DIFAR (Directional Low Frequency Analysis and Recording) system on-board P-3 aircraft.
Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Brent worked for Lockheed Martin in the Missiles and Space program in Sunnyvale, CA from 1984 – 1995. Brent often expressed the privilege he felt at having worked with the team that built, operated and maintained the ground control systems for testing the Hubble Space Telescope. While with Lockheed Martin Brent served as a Technical Advisor to the U.S. Air Force for the Milstar Satellite Mission Control System having sole responsibility for ground systems operations and providing extensive on-site support during on-orbit tests.
In 1995 Brent moved to Colorado Springs, CO continuing work with the Missiles and Space program as a Software Test Engineer. Brent’s career in software engineering and testing included work for MCI Worldcom, BEA Systems, and returning to Lockheed Martin Technical Operations through early 2005.
While attending Regis University in Colorado Springs, Brent met his spouse, Marcia Lemon. In 2005, the couple moved to Bonham, TX bringing them closer to family. Brent completed the Texas Master Gardener program, working part-time for a small nursery in the area. Brent enjoyed gardening with a passion for growing hot peppers—the hotter the better! He loved the “sweet and then hot” taste provided by the Habanero peppers he grew.
Brent later went to work for Nevil’s Leveling in foundation repair and leveling. It was here he met Jerry Spencer. While working together they formed a strong, brotherly bond. Their relationship remained very special to Brent and the two maintained regular contact until the time of Brent’s passing.
Brent and Marcia along with their the three cats (who adopted their humans) moved to Helena, MT in 2011 and spent the remaining years near Marcia’s family. Prior to retiring in 2022 Brent worked for Lowe’s in the Millwork Windows and Doors department. He formed many friendships with employees and customers alike. Brent sported a beautifully manicured, long, curly mullet haircut and became recognized at Helena Lowe’s as “the guy with the Mullet haircut.” Brent received a lot of joy from the daily visits of customers bringing their dogs into Lowe’s. He made sure to have an adequate supply of dog bones on hand. Many dogs made a beeline straight to Brent’s desk when they entered the store to ensure they got treats.
Among their special memories were the times Brent and Marcia spent visiting his parents. Some of Brent’s fondest memories were of the games of Uno played late into the night with his parents and aunt and uncle, Barbara and Johnny Lavender.
Brent loved the outdoors and was always very passionate about animals. He enjoyed fishing with his good friend Gordon Hovland. The Gates of the Mountains, with its scenic beauty and abundant wildlife was a favorite spot.
In addition to his loving wife of 25 years, Brent is survived by his parents Don and Alice Mervicker of Dorchester, TX, his brothers Scott Overstreet of Lexington, S.C. and Farren (Marie) Mervicker of Prosper TX, sister Shannon Bettis of Plano, TX, his niece Devyn (Overstreet) Lovejoy (Justin) of League City, TX, two great nieces Peyton and Avery Lovejoy, nephew Trey (Lindsay) of Forestburg, TX and their son Tristan Cumby, niece Deborah Mervicker of Frisco, TX, nephew David Mervicker of Dallas, niece Christen Bettis of Austin, TX and her daughter Brenlee as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. I went to HS with Brent. He was part of a small group of us who hung out together on weekends. I remember him fondly! He was a wonderful person! My prayers for his family and friends.
May I know how he passed? He was so young!
