Joseph “Joe” Dominic Obert
Joseph “Joe” Dominic Obert passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 12, 2018 with family at his side after losing his struggle with cancer. Joe was born August 25, 1952 and grew up in Belfry, Montana on the family farm. Joe attended school at Belfry and in 1970 Joe joined the US Marines and left home. After returning home from the Marines Joe worked a few different jobs but in December of 1972 he started working as a roughneck in the oil fields of North Dakota. That career which spanned over 40 years would take Joe to Wyoming, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, California and as far east as Mississippi and Louisiana. If Joe could stay busy he was at his best.
Joe had his own life struggles as everyone does but Joe understood those struggles better than any of us. Everyone’s struggles make up a part of who and what we are and Joe was no exception. Joe loved animals and was always the first to give his attention to the weakest and most timid of God’s creatures. Growing up on a farm and later, after his oil field career, working on his sister and brother-in-law’s (Lou Ann and Lowell Peterson) ranch were some of Joes favorite memories and most enjoyable times. He could never get enough of watching crops and livestock grow, especially when he could say he was a part of that. Even when it became physically trying for Joe to do what he wanted, he still stayed positive and busy.
Joe is survived by his daughters Jodi Krenning and Joni (Aaron) Gjermundson, his granddaughter Eva Gjermundson all from North Dakota and son Andron Tuss of Deer Lodge, Montana. He is also survived by his sisters Lou Ann (Lowell) Peterson of Bridger, Mary Lee (Ron) Krenning, and Marcia (Bob) Cichosz of Belfry and his brother Bert (Pam) Obert of Clancy, MT. Joe also held a most special place in his heart for his stepdaughter and her husband, Rita and Jeff Liedy of Shoshoni, Wyoming. Joe also has numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Mickey and Josephine Obert of Belfry.
We can list the facts and timeline of Joe’s life but none of us can list the totality of who Joe really was. Only his Lord and Savior can do that. Joe truly believed and trusted that God knew him best and was always with him and would care for him regardless of where he was. He would joke and wonder why people would spend so much of their time judging others when God would just have to correct it later. Joe knew he always had his Brother and Sisters there for him because “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” describes his family.
We know that Joe will now be walking straight and tall on his Savior’s streets of gold. But we also know that, right now, he would sure like to have one more chance to walk straight and tall on a quiet dirt road in the spring with nothing but his thoughts and our old dog Shep.
Cremation has taken place and a family memorial and celebration of Joe’s life will take place later this spring. The family asks that any offerings be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
