In Memory Of

Josephine “Jo” I. Brown age 101, formerly of Boulder

June 30, 1915 – October 9, 2016

Josephine I.  Brown, age 101, peacefully expired at her home on October 9, 2016. A Montana native who for the last 13 years lived near her Daughter, Nona Nauman and her family, just outside Weiser, Idaho.

Josephine was preceded in death by her Husband, Edgar G. Brown who passed away in 2002 at the age of 88. For decades, they were known synonymously as “Edgar & Jo.” They were a team; and, they enjoyed 67-years of marriage, working together to raise their family as well as becoming known throughout the Northwest where they bred & trained horses for pleasure, ranch, rodeo, AQHA events, and racing.

To their 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren, Jo was known as “Tootsie” – loving mother and grandmother to them all. While there was no one more loving, Tootsie’s strength was universally respected by everyone in the family, who all learned very early that you ‘don’t mess with Tootsie.’

Jo Brown was never interested in establishing a legacy that would be measured in dollars; rather, she spent her life leading by example, modeling for everyone in the family how to love, be kind, be strong, be loyal and do the right thing. It is this legacy that lives within all those who had the good fortune to know her, thankful for her 101 years of life.

The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Friday October 14th at Retz Funeral Home, 315 E. 6th Avenue. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday October 15th at Retz Funeral Home. Burial will take place following the service at the Jefferson City Cemetery.  A reception will follow burial in the social hall of Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N. Montana Avenue. Please visit below to offer a condolence to the family or to share a memory of Jo.

I met Jo and Edgar Brown in 1977 when I borrowed my mother’s Vega and drove from Montana City to Jefferson City to ask for a job. I was 15 years old and in love with horses. I parked the car and knocked on the door. Jo answered the door and as I was talking her eyes got really big. I had forgotten to put the car in gear or set the emergency break and it was rolling backwards down the driveway! Despite my introduction, Edgar and Jo gave me a job on the weekends cleaning stalls for $10 per day. We had a morning coffee break with homemade cookies from Jo and I was always invited to eat “dinner” at the ranch house at noon. When school let out I worked for them at the race track in Helena. I learned a lot from both of them. I am sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful woman.

I didn’t know your folks well, but I certainly knew who they were as I grew up in Jeff City. I loved to go for evening walks and watch the horses at “Mr Edgar’s Place.” I recall being 7 or 8 and thinking that a woman I had recently met was pretty amazing. My mother took me aside and gently explained that while the object of my fascination might drive a fancy car and wear flashy clothing, she was not a lady. She went on to say that if I wanted to meet a REAL lady, I only had to look in at the stables. She was right. Mrs Brown was always the picture of genuine grace and caring, a truly compassionate and loving woman. . The world was blessed to have her! You have my most sincere sympathy.
