Judith Mary (Judy Holm) Hazen passed away peacefully in her home, March 9, 2025, with family by her side, Judy was born June 8, 1934 to Everett and Margaret (Lucke) Holm. She was raised in Valier, MT graduating from high school in 1952. She attended Northern Montana College in Havre where she received her teaching certificate in 1954. While attending college she met many lifelong friends including Alvin (Herb) Hazen. Judy and Herb were married August 17, 1954. They lived in many Montana towns over the next 70+ years, including Valier, Sidney, Highwood, Lewistown, Great Falls, Fort Benton, and Helena.
Judy enjoyed many roles in her life. As a young homemaker, while raising four children, she found time to raise a large garden, bake homemade breads, rolls, maple bars, pies and delicious family meals. While in Valier Judy and Herb enjoyed square dancing, card playing, and visiting with the many family members who lived there. These hobbies and the love of travel were activities they continued for most of their lives. Judy taught school for a time but found more enjoyment working in many retail stores over the years. She worked beside her son Don at his Riverview Greenhouse and Floral business for 31 years, retiring at the age of 81. While there she was bookkeeper but really enjoyed helping customers most of all.
Countless miles were put on traveling to visit family and friends all over the country. Judy and Herb could always be counted on to be in attendance at sports and other school events for their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.
Judy’s Catholic faith was very important to her and was strengthened when she and Herb attended a Cursillo and many other spiritual training and enrichment programs. She was very active in many aspects of church liturgy until her eyesight failed a few years ago.
Judy and Herb spent the final eight years living with their daughter and son in law in their Helena home. Judy spent her final year on St. Peters Home Hospice care, she received excellent care and became very close to her care givers, especially Stacey and Cheryl. Judy also had many wonderful friends who stopped by to visit. This past summer Judy and Herb celebrated their 90th birthdays, and their 70th wedding anniversary with a gathering of over 65 family members and 40+ friends attending.
Judy was preceded in death by her husband Herb, her parents Everett and Margaret Holm, sister’s Sandy (Jim) Hayes, Rita (Al) Roland, brother Terry (Carolyn) Holm. In-laws Logan and Mae Hazen, sister’s in-law Nettie (Harry) Brost and Ruth (Cornie) Vermulum, brother’s in-law Donald Hazen, George (Ruth) Hazen, Logan (Imojene) Hazen, Dan (Maxine) Hazen and 6 nieces and nephews.

I only knew Judy for a short time, and I am truly blessed I got to spend some time with her. She let me talk her ear off and she would share her stories and words of wisdom with me. Anytime she talked about her family, her eyes would light up. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Aunt Judy’s own words, “I’m a tight old broad….
I ain’t closing the quote because may her memory stay with for a long time.

Aunt Judy and Uncle Herb always lived over 2000 miles from their East Coast branch of the family. I always enjoyed our trips to Montana for Hazen and Bruesch reunions and their 80th/60th birthday/anniversary. Aunt Judy was always easy to talk to and fun to be with. My heart goes out to my cousins at their time of loss. Judy and Herb are now back together and free from the pains of old age. God bless their large family.
