Katherine “Kay” A. Ebert
On Monday March 17, 2014, Kay passed away after a courageous battle resulting from an infection in her leg at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings. Kay was 78 years young.
Kay was born December 10, 1935 in Miles City, MT the second child of J. Ross Calvin, Jr. and Agnes (Nugent) Calvin. When she was 5 years old, her family moved to Napa, California where she lived for 6 years. Her family returned to Miles City where she graduated from Custer County High in 1953. Her first job was at Lincoln Grocery. She also worked at the Miles City Swimming Pool and the Red Rock Village.
She headed west to Missoula where she graduated from the University of Montana in 1957. She then landed a teaching job at Helena High School from 1957-1963. The fall of 1957 she met the love of her life Bernard J. Ebert. They were married December 27, 1958 in Miles City. Kay and Bernard had 5 children: Jeff (Mary Claire), Mark, Marcia (Brad) Smith, Mike (Nika) Ebert and Mary Ebert. Bernard died March 8, 1979.
She farmed in the Helena Valley with the help of her children until 2000, when she sold the farm and moved into Helena to be closer to Bill Roberts Golf Course, of which she was a member for many years. After her children were raised, she went to work for H&R Block for 14 years.
Kay is survived by her 5 children and spouses, 6 grandchildren, Carmen, Ashleigh, Kevin, Anna, Markell, and Faith Ebert. She is also survived by her brother Kenneth Calvin of Portland, Oregon and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mark & Betty Murray and Family says
All of our condolences to the Ebert kids. Thank you all, so much, for sharing Gramma Kay with the rest of us so willingly over the years. I believe that Kay lived her life kind of in the same way she prepared taxes. She knew what was allowed and disallowed; she always said to stay in the “black and white” and to stay out of the “grey areas” and she was very willing to tell you when she thought you might need an audit. Gramma Kay will be sadly missed, but she is in that great “tax free” heaven now with Bernard! Our prayers are with you all.
Jeannette Sutton says
Met Kay when I lived in Helena at Bill Roberts Golf Course. She was a very competitive golfer. I enjoyed playing Golf with her. When I moved to Logan NM. We tried to keep in touch with each other. As has been said by others She loved her family and life wasn’t easy for her when the children were growing up with out their father. She wasn’t one to complain. She was a person with great faith and suffered much pain for yrs. Didn’t want to complain. I will remember her for the rest of my life. She had a very good sense of humor too, for a person who had so many health problems. Love and prayers to the Ebert Family.
Jeannette Sutton says
Sorry I am unable to be with you for the service Monday. Kay will always remain with me in my heart. Thank you Mary for calling me. Know that Kay is no longer in any pain or discomfort. She did a wonderful job on our taxes when we lived in Helena. Knew exactly what she was doing. God Bless all of the Ebert Family

Ebert Family-
Kay will be missed. She put up with my and Mary’s shenanigans for many years with a shake of her head and “that look”. But, I knew it was because she cared about us and didn’t want us to get hurt. She was a great lady who loved her family very much. I am glad she is no longer in pain – I am sure she’s up in Heaven with your dad playing golf right now! She will be watching over all of you as you go on in life, protecting and guiding you. God bless you all – my thoughts and prayers are with you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

Jeff, Mark, Mary, Marcia and Mike,
Kelle and I were sad to learn of your mom’s passing. I have so many happy memories of Kay. Always at every game her kids and grandkids were participating in, she was the matriarch of your family and a guiding role model to those of us she frequently took under her wing. My mom never worried when I was over at the Ebert’s running around with Jeff and Mark. Kay had all of us under control. She was one of a kind. Now with your Dad, she’s keeping watch from a higher vantage point no doubt . You are in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless!
Joe and Kelle McMahon.

Joe E. Lee says
Mary,
I was so sorry to hear of your moms passing. I know she fought a terrific battle, becuse she was always a very strong person. I knew her mainly from the high school years. She could either be a “Tom Boy”, or a very beautiful lady. She excelled in any sport that she was involved in and always was a leader. I was so happy to spend some time with both you and your mom during the reunion. All of us who had the chance to meet you voted you a real keeper. My dad worked first for Kay’s grandfather, Jim Nugent and then her mother, who took over when he passed. Although, I don’t really know the rest of your immediate family, please know that all are in my thoughts and prayers. If there is anything that I can do, please let me know.
Helen and Paul Lucas says
When I moved to Miles City in 8th grade, your mom was the one who introduced me to her many friends and made me feel so welcome. I also was honored to be in your parents’ beautiful wedding. She was so proud of all of you, and may you be comforted in knowing that you were always there for her. She is now at peace. May God bless all of you with strength in the difficult days ahead.
Ken Calvin says
I loved my sister. She and I had a difficult upbringing but we overcame many obstacles together. I was very proud of Kay. She was a great athlete. She was a great Mother to her children, wife, daughter and mostly, to me, a sister. We were separated much of our lives by distance between Oregon and California and Montana. But I always appreciated the effort Kay made to stay in touch. I really appreciated the visit Kay and Mary and Marcia made a couple of years ago when my health was not good. My health is still not great and unfortunately will keep me from attending Kay’s services. Please no I am there in spirit and my deepest sympathies and condolences go out to all of Kay’s family and friends and especially the kids Marcia, Mary, Jeff, Mark, and Mike. You were all very lucky to have Kay as your mother and she was especially lucky to have you. I know nothing will fill the void that is left by Kay’s passing but please take comfort in knowing she is in a better place and no longer suffering. God Bless the Eberts!
